Halifax Build Log: Lumberyard

THANKS BRIAN, Dave what is the manufactuers name of the E6000 glue and can I get it through Amozon, 2 more things on the setern the back of the resin piece or wood backingg can be seen from the bow looking aft which I was going to paint black, ether with the wood backing or just the resin piece, will do the paint as you sugested,,, the other thing driving me nuts is the fashion pieces starboard and port and how they blend in with the wales trying to see if I can get it like the pictures in Hahns Book will show them after I cut the model from the Jig,,, right now markinf the deck clamp locations on the model just dry fitting the clamps using scraps when satified I will glue the permanant ones in place. E 6000 is very common I see it from Home Depot to the local Wallgreens and all over the internet.

I see what you are saying about the back of the stern piece it shows

so yes a backing piece will work as long as it is thin enough and bends to the arc of the stern. You can try your hand at painting first and if that does not work then use a wood backing.

the best place to get tips and information on finishing is to check out model railroad forums and plastic kit forums. These guys have methods of painting so you could not tell if it is wood or rusted metal, ivory, or weathered wood, old wood.

no doubt about it Don some aspects of the build are fussy and that molding at the sides of the stern is one of them. if you have access to the Hahn archives you may want to sort through some photos of the Hahn models. Some other ships have a better picture of those moldings.

some time ago I think on the old Yahoo Ships in Scale forum there was a topic about if stern carvings and figureheads were painted in colors. It might of come down to yes they were all painted bright colors. I kind of remember the Mary Rose had bits of paint still on the carvings.

anyhow I got this photo of a Halifax model by a builder who painted the stern and then weathered it fantastic looking sorry to say that was long ago and lost or I would post it.

another idea for the stern is to cut out the back round where I drew the red dotted line so the carving piece is separate where I filled in black your wood backing piece will show through

looking at your last picture that molding piece setting along the edge of the stern piece. I see an arrow should the piece be flipped? the arc looks odd to me
 
Thanks Dave GREAT IDEA ON THE CUTTING OUT OF THE DECORATION, also makes painting easier, WONDERFULL, yes the curve of the molding piece looks wrong but when I turn the model over it looks right will show a picyure of what it looks like right side up and the pattern is right on, the picture showing the fashion piece should be turned the fit is much better when the top becomes the bottom; more questions latter on the beams and ledges

There are a series of videos that Donnie put together to help members and they are at the top page of the forum. They are well worth watching. I have locked at some of them and will watch the all. I new of your concerns moving to a new system. Sometimes a change is vey good and at your age is not that easy but I think you caught on quickly

deck clamps finished, showing one ledger strip,,,question for Daves, where does the ledger beams and main beams end(AT THE FACE OF THE FRAMES OR INTERIOR ENDS OF THE FRAMES OR AS I CAN MAKE OUT FROM HAHN DRAWINGS THE CENTER OF THE FRAMES,,,,,will start to cut the model from the jig think now has enough support

by the way your work is impressive it is actually a Hahn reproduction built frame by frame timber for timber in your style. Very well done

I should have said student on your way to master builder
Now you are developing your skill set and getting an understanding of how wooden ships were built.

joe and I are working on a 3D model of the Halifax as a building aid so you will be able to view the stern from any angle and see how it all fits together. This is a big under taking and requires time and CAD skills but it is in the planning stages. If you build faster than we can create the 3D model I will do whatever I can to help you along.
