Hi new on the block. I'am a beginner little experience. I have the Scientific Models Constitution kit# 300, and the Thermopylae kit 182. Any comments?

Welcome aboard SOS, PeterB. We have a few build logs on the Scientific Models Constitution

Please check them out, If you have any questions, you can ask members who are building them.

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum

The Thermopylae is not often build - so highly interesting

Greetings Pete,

I am new to the SOS also. Good luck on your build.

Hi all. Thanks for the welcome. I am not familiar with the working of a forum yet, but not to old to learn. Ha, Ha. Question. What primer to use & do you prime all the parts that are going to be painted. I think I will start the Constitution first. Its been in the 90s here Clearwater Fl.

Welcome aboard! There are currently three recent builds that may be of interest. Two are of the Scientific USS Constitution models. One is of the Thermopylae. Good luck with yours!

If you are really a beginner I would suggest you hold on to those kits for a bit and start on something easier. There can be a steep learning curve (which I am in the middle of) with wooden ships. I spent many years with plastic models, but these creatures are of a completely different nature. Luckily the tools are more or less the same (except maybe for many more clamps!). I would suggest you start with the Model expo Shipwright series of three ships. They will give you full credit when you build the dory and send you a picture.

there are many building logs on this site and also many youtube videos to help you with these.

Ok, so, lets back up a second. Where did you buy the "Scientific" Constitution? Isn't that an older kit? Did you buy it new or from eBay? From what I have researched, I think this is an older kit. This would help.

The newer kits on the market have "matured" to the point that they are much better. Usually a much older kit - means more work and not necessarily more experience to produce a decent model.

Can you POST an image of the Constitution box and some of the contents?

To post an image, "WHILE YOU ARE CREATING A TEXT POST" Look to the immediate LEFT and BOTTOM of the post and you will see the words "Attach files".
When you click on that, your computer or phone will open another screen to SELECT the file or image you want to include.

Then you just click on POST REPLY.

Hi there. Here you go. Found receipt from 1980. It was a gift from a yard sale. I also have from the same year the Scientific Models "Thermopylae Clipper Ship Model. Kit 182.

Yep, that’s the one I’m working on. I’m bashing the sails and rigging, though. My build is pretty much step by step. If you have any questions or suggestions, either pm me or post on my build log. You can click on the post above that says USS Constitution or look at my signature block and click on the build. If you’re using your phone, you might have to turn your phone sideways to see the signature block.

I’ve never used primer on ships. I guess I figured they wouldn’t be banged around much. Acrylic paint seems to cover pretty well. I’ve also used shellac or polyurethane for extra protection.
