HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

That is a beautifull kitten Heinrich, a very nice addition to the shipyard.
Have fun with Strider :):)

By the way , my admiral asks me if you know what race it is, She likes it as wel

Dear Peter. Behind the scenes @Kolderstok Hans and I have been talking and he is taking a look at the drawings. The main problem is that the drawings only show six or seven bulkheads/frames so the top view drawing has to serve as guideline to add more frames. This s a long and complicated process, so I am leaving that up to Hans in his own time.

In the meantime, there is a new addition to the household.

Let me introduce you to "Strider"! He just followed me home after school, liked what he saw and decided to stay! At only 4-5 weeks old, it is really like having a baby in the house.
Beautiful markings! Be careful when it starts to jump and climb on things, especially things that have ships on them! ;)

Thank you, my friend. Please tell Marijke that he is 100% street cat!

Thank you, Dean! The color and markings are what attracted me as well. As to climbing on things - yes, this little one has already shown himself to be an excellent climber, hence me moving the WB to a safer place.

This picture will definitely nót be shared with the Admiral. For quite some time now I'm being bombarded with pictures and videos of cuties like Strider. Wonder what the hidden message is though...

Good morning Heinrich. Knowing you, you will pull this off. Cheers Grant
Thank you for the vote of confidence, Grant! It's somewhat out of my hands now, so let's see what Hans comes up with. It's definitely something that can be done with a 3D printed hull, for instance, but if we think of a kit in terms of frames and/or bulkheads, the approach is considerably more complicated!

True story, I remember my Victory being hauled over and foremast being broken by one of these little creatures ROTF
Yours was one of the "incidents" that made me relocate the WB. I remember your cat attack only too well!

I have no idea what the hidden message is, Johan - Strider was a pretty spontaneous happening! ROTF However, if things are starting to follow a trend, maybe it's time for closer investigation!

Dear Friends

I Have a LOT to share with you and it is all thanks to the most amazing efforts of one man - Hans van Nieuwkoop - and the best model ship company in the world @Kolderstok. And if you think I have made a bold statement, show me any other model company out there who is willing to help an individual modeler with his research by actively participating in the design and construction of a once-off model.

So, as to the work done and the thought process, over to Hans:

Okay, here are the results of the Dutch jury.

What have I done:

1 - bring the Ru-drawings (Russian drawings) to the same scale as the Kolderstok ones. This is not 100% accurate at this stage, as the shapes of both the ships do not entirely match each other. I copied the MDF keel plate, pasted a Ru drawing into the CAD-drawing and minimized this drawing until the shapes of both models merely matched. (Picture below)

2: With everything in the same scale, I could determine the widest part of the hull and measure it. With this dimension I could bring the frames to the correct scale (Below):

3: with the vertical lines in image 1 I could determine where the Ru frames are, compared to the Kolderstok ones.
I copied the frame lines and punt them over the corresponding Kolderstok frames: (The red frames are those of the Ru-drawings)

Image3.jpg

What you see here is the difference in the width between the two models (which is quite a lot...)
I have not taken in consideration the exact height of the new drawn frames (in red).

I did do some thinking about both the outlines. The Kolderstok ship is much narrower - but this is based on the drawings of Hoving and the Veer - which are based on old wreckages found in the Netherlands.

The Ru ship is much rounder and bulkier - like the old carracs from the late 15th and 16th century.

To create a new model - based on the Kolderstok ship of Willem Barentsz, but in a more rounded shape - is on paper doable (though not really easy), but to bring it to life (with laser cut frames, keel etc) will cause a lot of bashing and creating during the process. This is a bit more of a challenge.

Hope the above information helps you to make a proper decision. :) :)

Good morning Heinrich. Boy the difference between the two is significant in particular frames 1,2 and 3. The RU version is definitely has a way rounded shaped hull particularly at the bow. I think back to that cramp windlass which would now have plenty more space. Cheers Grant

Thanks Heinrich and Hans (@Kolderstok) for the time devoted to this project.
This project is so interesting, especially so, because with every turn you takes, a new challenge emerge.

PS Pictures are clearly visible.
