HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Planking sheets.jpg

Regarding precut blanks here are the sheets from my Speeljaght. You can see some of the compound curves that I doubt I would have figured out Redface
I soaked in water, formed and clamped in place to dry then glued in place. They all fit perfectly. Kudos to Kolderstoks precuts.

Also, Heinrich has mentioned the website https://www.modelbouwforum.nl/ It has excellent build logs of the Dutch ships we are building/contemplating building.
It is in Dutch however, when I first open the site, it is in Dutch, but my Windows translates it immediately to English. Anyone interested in these ships will find this site a valuable resource with some highly skilled builders.

No pressure Heinrich. Although if you finish today then, when asked, you can tell everyone "Oh heck, I finished the planking a year ago ROTF

I any case. Happy new year Bottle (Tea of course if you are still planking)

Ron
Hello my friend! Thank you for the New Year wishes - the same to you and your family! Unfortunately, I will not be able to finish the planking in 2021. There are still four planks that need to go on the Port Side, while I haven't made any progress since the last picture I posted earlier today. I actually removed a plank, because I didn't like the color at that point - I wanted something lighter/more yellowish so I re-planked that strake. (Added to that, I only plank in natural light - my artificial lighting is terrible and the shadings play havoc with planking lines.

On that topic you will have noticed that even though the whole hull is planked in walnut, there are actually two color configurations in the planks: One is a lighter brown/almost yellowish color while the other planks are very dark brown with an almost "purplish" tint. That means that if you carefully select the colors, you can actually create nice patterns in your planking.

Ron, this is fantastic that you have posted this picture - thank you so much. Now we can glean a much better idea of what it actually looks like. This will certainly help in the construction of both the Speeljacht and the Fluit. It is no coincidence that they are Kolderstok's latest models.

That is great Dean Thumbsup- I couldn't agree more with you!

I will rather tag Hans @Kolderstok so that he can answer your questions and provide information as to when it will be available. That way you know you get the most up to date news and specs. During the test build, there were still quite a few things under consideration, so it is best that Hans answers you in that regard.
Sounds good, I still have a long ways to go on the NL! But I want to build this ship! ;)

Hi Dean! A Very Happy New Year to you and your lovely family as well! You are right, it has just turned 12 (seven minutes past) so I am already in 2022! :D

I will use this log (sorry Heinrich) to thank everyone who has bought a Kolderstok model this year. It is very much appreciated.
Kolderstok started in 2015 as a small one man kitchen table company, and the money I earned with it was merely a bit of pocket money beside my normal job.
Now we are 6 years further, and I am still a small company (and still doing a lot at our kitchen table). But in these years the number of boxes we sell has grown so much I can actually earn a living out of it.
So everyone who has bought a Kolderstok model or some accesoiries this year - THANK YOU!
For the upcoming years we have a lot of new things in mind to develop, but first of all we are taking the last steps in finishing the kit of the 17th century Fluit. We are doing our best to have it available somewhere februari 2022, but the amount of work I have - coming from the daily business - makes the progress a bit slow.

I will try to make a new log about the fluit the coming days - but cannot guarantee this. It will come however.

For now I wish every reader here a very happy and good new year! Go build a boat!

Thank you for the update Hans! I’m looking forward to the Fluit! But no rush, we want her to be great! Wishing you and your family a great New Year filled with health and prosperity in 2022!

And on New Year's Day the Starboard Side has been fully planked! :) You will recall that this is is the side where I stripped off three planks earlier, and then very late last night a freshly-laid plank was removed again because I wasn't happy with the color pattern.

The three red arrows point to three lines which are not "crispy" enough for my liking. Some sanding tomorrow in daylight and it will be perfect. After all the issues that the starboard side has given me, it has turned out very nice in the end. If I can get the Port Side to look like this, I will be a very happy camper!.

That is sure looking good! Is that walnut perchance?

I have absolutely no doubt you will accomplish your goal. Happy camping Heinrich

Thank you for the kind words, Phil. Yes, it is all walnut. At times, especially when it comes to the vertical bending of the strake, it can be a real tough cookie, but the visual appearance makes up for it (in my opinion at least).
