HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

Two of my "perks" of the new job, are an Apple MacBook Pro and an Oppo A72 5G mobile phone. Since I have never used Apple products before, I am really struggling with the laptop and have quickly reverted to my Xiaomi - which is a lot faster. However, I was very interested to see what the camera of the Oppo would be like and what better subject to test it out on than the Willem Barentsz! :)

The Oppo is classified as very much of a mid-range phone (I think in the US it retails for 219 USD) and as such the camera specs are nothing to write home about either. It features a quad-camera set-up with a 48MP main camera, 8MP ultra-wide camera, 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP B/W camera. The device allows you to toggle between the 48MP and 12MP cameras. The 48MP camera doesn’t feature a zoom function, but the 12MP camera surprised me.

So, off came her blue blankie (I know ... she gets preferential treatment) ... and these were the results:

Compared to my top-of-the-line Huawei with its Leica lenses and what have you, the Oppo's colors are a lot starker and more sombre, but much more realistic in my opinion.

In any case, it was a great excuse to see the Willem Barentsz again after being covered up now for almost a week! :)

Hi Heinrich. The pictures of that camera looks promising. Always fine when you are satisfied with the first results.
And about the Apple’s: you love them or you h……. But take you time, I don’t want nothing else!
Regards, Peter
Thank you Peter. This is obviously a highly subjective topic and one I know nothing about, but the one thing that has always puzzled me about the Huawei, was that the wood looked as if it had already been treated with some or other finish. With this camera, the wood looks a lot "duller" and while the pictures do not look as attractive as those of the Huawei, it is definitely closer to the truth.

Hi Heinrich,

Very nice information about the replica / model ship build by Koos.

I personaly like the straking / lines of the wales more with this model compared to the Kolderstok model. I know you explained it to me how this comes, but from my perspective and my studies into planking and paterns, this looks more realistic and true to the timeperiod. This means that the frame on the bow has a more rounded profile. I think the Kolderstok is too "pointy" like a speedboat. ;)

However, your model looks absolutely fantastic with your new phonecamera!! Love it! :cool:Thumbsup

One is never to old to learn something new. I agree the pictures look more to what she actually looks like. Of course this come from one who hasn’t seen her in person ;)
Looks like she has settled into her new digs well. Have you?

Thank you very much for the kind comments re my WB, Peter - it is much appreciated! As to the two variations, I obviously built according to the Kolderstok version - hence the difference. As to which one is preferable, it is very much a subjective choice and I will always respect an alternative opinion - so no worries there! :) It is great to have Koos's model which I can showcase to our members as the perfect example of another interpretation - it all adds to the rich history and to the story of the WB!

Thank you Ron! You know what Kolderstok's walnut looks like in the flesh, so you can make a good call on this - I am glad that you agree with me. However, I have not moved yet, so this is still in the old shipyard. I am still waiting on the school to finalize my apartment. :)

Hello Heinrich- interesting read as always- when you see how the replica was created with all our modern CaD design and build techniques, you have to give it to the shipwrights of old.

Most noticeable discrepancies to my untrained eye is the gun port lids are open;).

PS - apple MacBook the best PC I have ever worked with. Once you get it you will love it.

Cheers
Grant

I second that, my iMac and MacBook Pro are great PC's. I spent a half of a lifetime in the DOS, MS Windows and other OS systems world. Switched to the Apple world when I retired. I have one lone Dell tower running Windows XP, It's the brains for my model railroad, other than that everything is Apple. The Admiral has her own MacBook Pro and has become very proficient. So getting used to your new Laptop is just a matter of use and asking questions. Hah, just like building ships here on the forum.

I second the fact that the old shipwrights were in a class of their own Grant! You will recall that I was also in two minds as to whether show my model with open or closed gunports. In the end, I am very glad that I listened to the advice that I received from my friends here on SOS, to keep them closed.

I hear what you are saying about the Apple, BUT ... last night I had to download a textbook that was 1.65 GB in size. I connected both the Apple and the Xiaomi to my home W-Fi and started the download on both simultaneously. The Xiaomi was finished in a quarter of a time that it took the Apple to complete the download. Fact!

Mac 128.jpg

When I started with 'puters my first was a Mac 128. Now I'm really telling my age. I remember carrying it to work every day as my then boss did not believe in computers or calculators. (Yes, he was a slide rule guy) I'm sure you guys remember when, if you had a 300 baud modem you were in tall cotton. ;)
Over the years we finally got computers unfortunately they were dos based. (Before windows) and I was pretty much forced that way because at the time most of our business software would not run on the mac platform. I know there were work arounds to run some of the dos-based applications on the Mac, but they were sometimes clumsy. You can't beat a Mac for anything graphics related. You guys are making me jealous. :p
Heinrich you will love your Apple product.

Jan, learning new technology has never been my strong point. I remember that when Audi switched to digital dashboards on the then new TT in 2016, it was a nightmare to me. And I had to be fully proficient in its use as I did the product training to salesmen.

My Xiaomi is actually a gaming laptop so it is very powerful and I simply love the big screen. The downside is that it is a very heavy and unwieldy laptop to cart around.

Ron, I will be fair and give it a proper go. My main gripe is just that it is so different to anything else I have ever used.

Hello Dear Friends

The first @Kolderstok kit box for the new Fluit has just come off the production line. Congratulations Hans!

Thank you for forwarding this! :)
At the moment it is quite hectic here to get all the items packed together, and making a new log for this ship is one thing to do, but it is postponed constantly...
:-(

Heinrich’s next build? Looks to be quite a planking job that one:)
Hello Ron. Building the Fluit will definitely be a challenge. However, at this stage a "next build" is very far into the future - I am sitting here with piles of books stacked up in front of me preparing classes. :)
