After three days of painstakingly working on the Starboard side gunports, I have something to show. The three ports that will remain open and receive cannons, have received their inner frames which have been painted in "Karmozijn" red - a very dark, almost purplish red - and the closed ports have received their inner backing. Originally, I wanted to leave the gunport closest to the stern open, but that would have been incorrect. The two most rearward cannons did double duty: they were either placed in the position of the two most rearward ports, or, if the ship was being chased, they would be turned around and placed in the two stern ports. Seeing that I have already mounted the two cannons in the stern, placing a further two in the two most rearward gunports on the sides, would have been incorrect.

I am now in the process of assembling a cannon and carriage which I can use for determining final mounting heights and angles.

Good afternoon Heinrich. White jackets should be a standard issue for each and every one of us. ;) . All the technical debate aside Heinrich the gun ports and your WB is wonderful. Cheers Grant

"So, you cut out the gunports, just to glue them back into position? Nuts ..."

Afte exactly one week of work, the gunports on the Starboard Side are finished.

Tonight, I had a female colleague over who had never in her life seen a model ship. I showed her the Sampan, the Batavia, Willem Barentsz #1 and WB#2. She barely afforded the other models a second glance - she just had eyes for WB#2 enthusing about the "striking contrast of the wood-color and white waterline and the karmozijn of the gunport frames. :)

The challenge is now to repeat this exercise on this Port Side.

Thats because you "owned it" Heinrich.
 
A lady who obviously recognises quality work even though she is viewing ship models for the first time.

Great job on those gun ports Heinrich.
(I looked up “karmozijn” but can’t find a definitive definition. There’s a brewery in Belgium but I am convinced that is not it :D ).

Thank you very much for the compliment, Roger. She is our Fine Arts teacher so i do value her opinion. "Karmozijn" is a deep dark, almost purple/burgundy type of red. In the bottle, it looks red, but comes out surprisingly dark when applied.

The difference between Karmozijn and red. Come to think of it, Roger - it would look fantastic on the Syren! :)

Thank you very much my friend - the other side will have to wait a little, because of the start of the school year. I agree - the Karmozijn is a very rich color.

Hans uses the modern name - Karmijn.
 
Just when I think I have made progress, the little ship bites. This is what happens when you take your eye off the ball for a split second.

Take note of the position of the gunport second last from the stern. Now compare it to WB #1

On WB#1 there is no problem, because the gunport lid is closed. On WB#2 however, the open gunport lid will foul the deadeyes. :eek: And what is really frustrating is that there is no excuse for this blunder. I had WB#1 two meters away from where I worked, so checking that was the easiest thing in the world.

The only solution will be to close up the offending gunport and open the one most rearward (which will be strictly incorrect as I already have the two cannons mounted in the stern!)

Open that lid 90 degrees, it doesn't have to be open almost 180 degrees. In fact, you could open all of them 90 degrees ;)
 
I would say, place your deadeyes, and then check how far you can open your gunportlids, before making a drastic dicission Heinrich.
If you are not satisfied, then you can always alter something in your kanon placement.
