This is really a very interesting ship and model - a very clever decision to make this model as a kit.
I recognize, that this is the cutter from 1777, a very good book is from the Anatomy of ships series and written by Peter Goodwin.
Did you realize, that the kit designed has single and double frames? Definitely the framing is very interesting.
A smaller ship for POF + available additional documentation with the Goodwin book + interesting structure => this kit will be sold very often (I guess)
Please keep us informed, if you get more information about this kit.

A model of the Alert is a long dream of me. But I think, to build a historically accurate model of the ship, you have to redesign the hull lines with the original drawings of the NMM. I started with this work, but I have to do some more work after finishing my other drawing projects (HM Sloop Fly, HMS Triton).

Another question which I couldn't answer in the moment, is the frameing of the model. Double frames, single frames of the English Standard method. The ship was build on a private shipyard.

that is a good question the method of double frames with 2 single frame between the doubles were indeed a method used in some of the royal shipyards. not always the case in private yards. If a private yard was contracted to build a ship for the royal navy they would be given a contract and specifications. in most cases those single frames were not frames at all but just loose timbers wedged between the inner and outer planking. When the planking was removed those single timbers fell out.


another approach to a model of the Alert is get some framing stock and build it the Hahn method of building frame blanks and frame the model in a jig.

Dave, the keel of your reconstruction is definitly wrong. Alert did not have a straight keel.

The drawing was my first try for a reconstruction, but you can see the curve of the keel. The joint between keel and stem is not the English methods for building this The stem joints are the same as I am working with in my actaul version. Here you see the same version as by Goodwin

Do you work with 3D software? My idea is to build the model with original styled frames, but a simplified structure, as you show in your build. I have choosen the original room and space of the original drawing for this. Each frame is 8'' thick and the space between two frames also. For choosing the Hahn method you can work with 2x 4'' timber.

So many interesting projects and so little time :confused:

I did the Alert drawing some 15 or so years ago the curve in the keel escaped my attention never noticed it or thought it was just a distortion in the plans.

but good catch on your part

yes I do simple 3D work with programs like fusion 360, turbo cad, and sketchup However the 3D work being done on the steam engine is done by Mohamed and he is working from my CAD drawings. His work is far advanced and falls into industrial engineering.

Dave, Again I thank you and Ev, for the order, NOW I HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM, looked through all the materials and could not find the lasser cut board of deck beams did you send them with the order, NOW I FIND MISSING, OR I CAN NOT FIND THE BOARD BULKHEADS No. 23 AND 24 AND UPPER TIMBERS No. 22 AND 23 are they on the board with the deck beams, if not let me know if I misplaced them and I will tear apart the materials looking for them, I have the BOARD THAT HAS THE KEEL, STEM, STERN POST, please let me know, and DAVE IF THERE ARE ANY COSTS PLEASE TELL ME. THANKS AGAIN Don

Hi Everyone, have just been looking at the Chinese E-BAY SELLER(JIANGXUEZUIMEI) she has what I think is a new kit out it is CUTTER ALERT POB, with a lot of 3D pictures, resonable price, does anyone know more about this kit. THANKS Don
