HMS Alert by Jolley Roger

As there is +- 114 chocks to get holes drilled, I decide to make a template for drilling the holes.IMG_20200924_120500.jpg

I've marked the drill bit so I only drill about 3/4 through, put the template on the other side and drill again, this avoid any alignment issues

Results: not perfect, but consistent

Now a question, what would the bolt pattern be on the scarph for joining the lengthening piece to the futtock?
I have some ideas, but not sure what would be appropriate for Alert:

It's a pitty we don't see these scarphs in Goodwin's book ...

I just found the Stempost, Keel and Keelson Scarph

Stempost and Keel use the same pattern like you did on the chocks, so you might stay with it ... but I also like your second version, similar to the keelson ...

jeep asked how I used paper as simulated caulking and here is a brief explanation. Actually a very simple process:
I'm using 80 gsm black paper for demonstration purposes. Cut the paper the same width as the wood you want to caulk and stick it on with pva glue. Glue the pieces of wood together and that's it!
I went with tissue paper on the Alert, as I want a more subtle look.

Joint with tissue paper, not sure what gsm number, probably around 30

re again on your post #41:
like I said, I am still not sure what the "correct" bolt pattern would be, but looking again very close at the pictures in the Chinese Built Logs they also seem to have used your second version (three bolts in a row).
And - concerning the "other" question arised here and in other threads - there bolting is seen on the outside of the ribs too...

I'm not sure if I will follow them... seems like a thousend holes to drill/Bolts to set ... and one stray bullet could ruin the (great) looks of it ...

Strange because it also says 2 bolts for the keelson, nevertheless 4 bolts are shown on the drawing

If it was copper bolts I think ½" sounds fair (reckon the head would be around 1" then). If it was trennals I think ½" sounds far too small.

Wonder if it ould be the same way for the toptimer-futtoch scarph, 2 short bolts in the scarph and 2 long bolts going also through the deck clamp and the beam shelf?

Thanks for your input guys.
The bolt question!
I also saw mention of trennals on another log!
I think its gonna come down to personal choice
It should be a matter of personal choice and capabilities. In fact, the 'bolt' size is relatively small 0.39mm ~ 0.40mm but the black color will emphasize the effect and will make it visually 'bigger', IMHO. I am more towards the brass\coper wire. Also, there are two types of plain scarfs: shorter and longer. For long scarph, three holes should be sufficient and 2 holes for the shorter ones. ;)

Keep up the good work, remember it's a marathon not a sprint.
You will have many years to enjoy the finished model...and you don't want to look at the model and say I should have slowed down to make this or that better.
Besides, we're enjoying your build log, why would we want it to end?

My chock-omoter tells me that I'm more than halfway through building frames :) IMG_20201014_120031.jpg
I'm also slowly starting to fill up the cradle with frames, so it almost looks like a shipIMG_20201013_075744.jpgIMG_20201013_075820.jpg
My sheets 2, 4, 6, and 7 has been badly 'mauled' by the cnc cutter, think it is luck of the draw if you will get one of these or not. Hopefully Trident will figure out what causes this and fix it in future productions?IMG_20201011_120411.jpg
It looks bad from farIMG_20201014_093343.jpg
...but far from bad after a bit of TLC with a diamond file and some sandpaper
