HMS Diana by Caldercraft

I started with the 2nd planking.
To allow the strips to fall into their natural "fold", there were apparently 2 methods used in the past :
English on the left and Dutch on the right... The Dutch seems to me to be the easiest (in my case).
Sanding after completion....

P.S
Won't be active on the blog for the next 2 weeks.... My wife asked to paint some rooms... I can't refuse.,,, :) :) :) :)

Today, this same picture was also mentioned in my review. It’s a great start to a good project. I’ll be following your progress; it’s looking great. We seem to be from the same time period and country!

Before installing the lower rail (casting strip delivered with the kit)...I decided to first install the catheads.
This because the casting strips will need to be carefully manipulated to shape so the curves fits perfect together with the Catheads.... ( green line on plan...)...
And they are made out of two pieces each...

I just noticed, and love, that you included the black strake above the wales. Kudos!!

Dear Allan,

Wow, thanks for the compliment.... Thumbs-Up

Tomorrow ( Saturday) I'm going to glue the lower rail casting strips and then the main rail. Then paint everything neatly where necessary. Then provide the holes for the Boomkins. For the latter it is not yet clear to me where exactly these should be placed (relative to the bow)...

I have a problem(s). Although everything was accurately measured (e.g. the gratings fit perfectly inside the main rail)...and placed in such a way, I still have a problem with the lower rail: see photo. The lower rail comes over the anchor hole, which is actually not allowed. Don't get it. Now I have to think to neatly connect the lower rail to the catheads... what went wrong?

Another issue I have is the rudder assembly:
the instructions are mentioning to sand the rudder to a taper with a thickness of 3mm at keel level!
Keel level? 3mm? the rudder is 5 mm thick....
Is this advisable?

You can look at other images and you will see that your cat davit is not connected to the rail using a curved bracket. That is, you need to do it as in the drawings shown.

In the drawing for six frigates, including HMS Diana, the middle rail also falls on the fairlead. But it is not known whether Diana was built exactly according to this drawing.

Hello thx a lot!!!! :)
But not possible with the kit (casting)... One important remark is the casting goes indeed over a anchor hole...
So I will try to obtain the best fit but it will not be perfect...

Hello everybody,

As recommended, I tapered the rudder to the specified 3 mm, and must admit it is nice.
I also copper plated the rudder ... went very well and looks beautiful,,, :)
But please allow me to make a remark: pay attention to the installation of the pintle castings...
If you follow the instructions I'm pretty Shure you will run into problems: See instruction plan.
If you fit first the bracket castings (365) and try later on to fix the rudder with the pintle castings 364... into the 365...There will be no space enough.
Eg you cannot slide the rudder with the pintle castings into the hole (from the 365) as there is no room in the six gaps in the rudder plate..

On the other hand, I am very happy with the solution provided for the bow. eg the middle rail fits now perfect!!!! Thx!

And, I made the first grating.....

PS
It took me a whole day to glue the rudder braces....

Cheers

Marc

I did make a mistake: during the planking of the Stern I overlooked the gun ports, that is to say I thought it would work if I just glued them on.
So no !
;)Completely drilled out the 2 gun ports, auctioned, etc. and then neatly fitted... seamlessly. But unnecessary work that could easily have been avoided...
