HMS Enterprise 1774 POF 1:48.

Hi Grant

Your build is looking great. The comments on CNC vs laser are interesting. Laser cut parts have char and the "angle" problem, but CNC cuts can also be a pain in the a..... especially when the cut is not deep enough. Rooting out the CNC debris from the cut is time-consuming, the attachment joints can be thick and always need sanding, plus there is the corner problem, where all the corners are rounded, and you have to cut out the round to make it sharp-....It's all part of the fun......

CAFs Customer Service is very responsive and fast. In my kit, I had a missing sheet, plus I destroyed some stern pieces - Tom quickly sent me replacements at no cost ! I suggest that you do a complete inventory of your kit's parts early in case any more are missing.

I'm glad you followed Allan's suggestion- I wish I had tapered the knee of the head early in my build. It is a lot harder to do later.
You might want to shape and dry-fit the Lion figurehead on the knee at this time also......

Cheers

Alex R
Good morning Alex. I always appreciate your input with this build as you know what is coming my way…..Thanks.

That is a good idea. Before Tom sends me a replacement sheet, I must check all the parts just in case something else is missing.

I did check my Lion to the taper and it looks good. I will have to open the Lion up some still even with the taper.
Cheers Grant

Hi Chuck. Hopefully not a prolonged “buildus interruptus “ ROTF ……I see a mountain of frames to construct- May take a while:oops:. Cheers Grant
Grant! I was thinking that there was some other part of the work that you would carry forward. Having watched some of you masters build POF, I get that the frame construction is an endurance project, but probably more satisfying than removing just enough char.

Keep'em coming, Grant!

Blessings.
Chuck

Good morning. Tom from @CAFmodel has already dispatched my parts- thank you.

Frames :
The kit provides for a simplified frame construction and is not 100% accurate to the contract measurements or structural frame construction during this period as shown below:

This being my first POF I am sticking to the kit design.

The kit does not have any chocks and the futtock are all the same width. The frames are made by an overlap process and relatively easy provided you take care.

There are bevel lines on those forward and aft frames. I did take some risk (being new to this POF game) and bevelled each of these frames at this stage , leaving about a mm for final shaping once the frames are all in place (mistake or not…..we will find out).

Welcome in the world of PoF, Grant. Yes, with the ‘bold F’. Building frames is coming for a lot of hours: removing char, ordering parts, gluing the layer and lining them, sanding the bevels ……..
But what I see is that you are learning quick and doing a great job. And it’s good to leave some wood above the bevel line. With all the frames in place you do the final sanding. But that’s for later ……
Regards, Peter

Good afternoon Peter. Yep a bold F. Hopefully that F doesn’t translate to a F on my report card and more to a F for fabulous. ;) …..we shall find out one way or another. Thanks for the vote of confidence and I am feeling pretty good about it as I am leaving some leeway for any variances later. Cheers Grant

Looking good, Grant. Lots of work to do here but remember that this IS the build and is the feature that people will see and admire most.
Thanks Paul. I agree with you. It is the reason why I am leaving some room to play with on the frames. There is plenty of sanding coming my way. In addition I am being very careful to ensure the frame build matches the 1:1 diagram of each frame. That been said. I can see POF modelling exposing all of one’s flaws (it feels like wearing a hospital gown and walking around with my butt exposed ROTF ) so best I get it right….. Cheers Grant.
