Hello everyone! As an enthusiast focusing on sailboat models, I'm currently attempting to build the HMS Enterprize from 1774. I'm sharing this post to document the building process, and I warmly welcome your suggestions! Without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Will you be tapering the knee of the head to the 6 inches called out in the original contract?

The knee of the head to extend to the upper side of the upper cheek, to be 11¾ ins thick at the stem and 6 ins at the fore end; the 2 upper bolts to be 1¾ ins diar in the knee, & 1⅝ ins in the stem, the third 1½ ins in the knee & 1⅜ ins in the stem, the fourth 1⅜ ins in the knee & 1¼ ins in the stem, the fifth to be 1¼ ins in the knee, & 1¼ ins in the stem; & all the rest to be 1¼ ins diar quite thro’. All the holes to be bored thro’ with proper size augers, that is, to receive the bolts in the least drift, that no Reeming may be suffer’d from the stem in, that the holes be bored before the Canvas is put on, & the knee swung off, to observe if the Holes are all good, before any bolts are drove: To have a Throat piece of sufficient depth of elm, tabled & billed, & well secured with bolts drove up with plugs'

Is there a reason you chose to build her after she was converted to a receiving ship hulk in 1787 when she was anchored in the Thames rather than her design when built to be a fighting vessel in 1774? At that time she was first used to meet incoming foreign vessels, then for holding impressed men before being taken to their assigned ships, thus the new deck in the hold midships. At least you won't have to add masts and rigging :)

The more I see these newest kits, the more positively impressed I am with how some of them are so well done. The research that goes into these new entries is obvious with so many little things being done so well. The older we get, the less time and everything else we have, so these new opportunities can keep us in the game longer than ever. I used to rue the day I could no longer use my little shop of tools for scratching, but now there is a pleasant future for when those days arrive.
