HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Beautiful simulation of the sheaves Grant. why don't you leave that "sheave" portion unpainted, just dab it with some Danish or polyurethane to make it slightly darker but to keep the definition?

Morning Tyler,

Beautiful work, as always.
What I noticed though, was that there's no eyelet on the caronade through which one guides the caronade's rope:

Is this an omission of the kit?

Kind regards,

Johan

Hello Johan. The kit has no rigging on the carronades. I made the eyelets fitted on the base and loops with the thread to attach the poor blocks( Artesania Latina) I bought locally- same ones I used for the quarter deck cannons.. The metal work re hooks etc I’m not there yet.

As for the eyelet on the cannon itself(your reference) I did attempt to loop some brass 1mm wire but it was horrid. So I accepted mine and the kit limitations. Overall I’m happy with the look.

Thanks.

I agree with you on the cannon rigging - not my favorite part of shipbuilding. I think it will prevent me from making a big ship like your Victory!
Hi Paul...yep for sure. There should be a warning on Victory kits for beginners - next time I will build a tug boat.ROTF. Besides the “fiddle” Bits I am enjoying making the foredeck.

Cheers
Grant

What is crazy- I’m running out of 0.25mm thread. I have not yet really started my rigging- I think it is Serving adding the extra stays and other lines on bowsprit, cannon rigging, serving the Mizzen shrouds and the stays. Perhaps I’m also a deemed “slacker”.ROTFThis hobby is crazy fun.:D.

.... or maybe the real reason: instructions say 100m of 0.25mm - there is no way the little roll I got was 100m. I got to give it up to Mantua (with all its scale and lack of details, this is the only missing part of significance.

Hey Tyler,

It's sometimes trial and error with rigging; ropes, blocks, missing instructions and what not. And above all, the result should please you.
When you're happy with "the fruits of your labor", than that's what counts; the ramblings of a fellow builder can and must be neglected.

Enjoy your build,

Johan

Thanks Johan- the only rambling on my log is Probably my ownRedface. The advice and help from yourself and so many other guys who have contributed to my build has helped me Immensely. I would hate to think what would have been my result without you guys. This being said I do listen to my own voice and builder license once in a while.Thumbsup

Super appreciated.
Cheers

I am off into the desert for my rally for a Few days. Enjoy your building while I try stay on two wheels. Just a quick note of appreciation to everyone’s likes, encouragement, advice and humour (small thing often forgotten which brightens ones ship building dark moments ).Virtual ship building friends have been made here and thanks to the administrators and those who work behind the scenes to make this awesome site work. Cheers.

Hello Grant! Time flies - it was like yesterday when you posted the pictures of preparing the bike. I wish you everything of the best go give them stick, but just make sure that you return in one piece with all limbs needed for shipbuilding, intact! Thumbsup

Hi Grant, just catching up on your build. As far as cannon rigging goes, well I do not enjoy that either. 2.5mm blocks are just too darn small to work with. Your Carronades are really awesome looking though!! Hope you had a fun safe bike rally. I found an old picture of my bike back in the day of my youth. A Suzuki 550 ringgg dinggg dinggg dingg 2 stroke. Thought you might get a kick out of it.
