HMS Victory Mantua 1:78 (first build) by Grant Tyler

Good evening. A little progress and some experimentation. Some more yards and spars.

The dead eyes and strops for the futtock shrouds and top masts. I have been experimenting a little. Here is what the Portsmouth Victory looks like :

My initial construction of the Mizzen was to make as per instructions Where there are none and the shroud line goes directly up and around the deadeye-like so :

My “Siren” began to sing o_O...experimented
First attempt- looked nothing like picture above:

I then tried this :
I made some Strops and some hooks for the futtock shrouds using 0.6mm wire. Shaped with needle nose pliers around a 0.5mm drill bit for the strops and a toothpick for the hooks. I think it adds better detail to my Victory. I bound the strop with 0.25mm thread where it passes through the top below the deadeye to secure it to the top.

Broke my railing when inserting these as they need a little manipulation- Eish. Will be easily fixed tho. I quite like them:)

So do I, Grant!

Good afternoon from Melkbosstrand on this lazy, sunny Saturday. Thank you guys. I am going to run with these on all the masts. I hope I can get them all similar as I often make one really well and the next like a rats nest..ROTF

Back a few posts to my yards- I thought I had added some extras and ready to go.....ROTFROTFROTF.Doing some reading I came across this (red marks are mine). Apologies if a little small.

Learned a whole load- Firstly what I call spars are actually studding sail booms and sails are hoisted on these. The small yard for the top of these sails is hoisted up with the sails. Secondly the main sails are not attached to the yard itself but a jackstay which runs on top of the yard. (I have never seen a model Victory with sails Attached in this manner). Thirdly each yard sling is different, with some having partial and others full slings, and some with none. This can been seen in McGowens drawings in second diagram.
Fourthly each yard etc has differing cleats, boom irons etc.

In the first diagram The items crossed out do not fit Victory and the arrows are what I decided to make.

Progress thus far :
Made the studding boom sail iron from 3mm left over deck planks and added some small nails and 2mm masking tape for the bands. Shaped a 2x2 mm for the cleats.

The attachment for the sling which goes around the mast cap I used a metal bead (stole from my daughter bead box). I seized a 1mm thread with 0.25mm and attached to the yard sling.( too many slings hereROTFROTF

I struggled tying off the eyelet on the sling. I used a similar knot as gammoning my bowsprit however I'm thinking a simple seizing may come out better.

I remember when you didn't know any nautical/ship terms. Now I can't even track with what you are saying ROTF . You're a quick study...
ROTFROTF “Monkey see- monkey do” “copy and paste”-I would say I do not even remember a third of what I have read so far. You probably can’t track,Paul, because my paraphrase posts don’t explain very well...;). I try to keep them short or my log will be over a 100 pages. ROTFROTFCheers Grant

Good morning- I redid the eye for the sling around the sling. Why the squared off part of the yard is called a sling I will never know. With all the manipulation to undo my previous error the rope has frayed a little. I will run this through a candle quickly and these will burn off. Has worked well on my shrouds on the Mizzen mast.

I agree with Paul, Grant! Your exponential learning curve is nothing short of astounding and your rigging work has been exemplary. Boy oh boy, there are a number of superb models being built now and your Victory is squarely among them! Thumbsup

Good afternoon- Heinrich. Thank you really appreciate this. I do think I still have my training wheels on:) - at least I can use the throttle and brakes a little now- Best analogy That I can think of ;).

Good afternoon- Yards ready for blocks and rope work for the Main mast and Bowsprit.

Differences on each yard- 1 and 2 there are cleats, studding sail irons and different number of bands. (For the main and Top sail yards). This is obvious as they have the studding booms. 3. Just the cleats, and 4 the spritsail yards no cleats. 5. The spritsail yard also does not have the central cleat or the central sling however I did add sling just because I liked it. ;)

More strops on foremast.

I know my log bounces all over, however it is what I do at that time. I will bring it all together periodically. Hope you all had or are having a great weekend.

My friend thank you so much for posting this - this is most interesting. I have just read in Ab Hoving's book that the Willem Barentsz was equipped with 3-pounder cannons so these puppies would have been grossly oversized for her! :) At Dolphin Beach - the site where they believe the remnants of the Haarlem will one day be excavated from - apparently is home to 19 bronze cannons from the Haarlem.
