La Renommee 1/48th Scale

What's not to love? Outstanding construction, Chris!

Thanks Brad - believe me the crown rail and is mounted solidly to the stern timbers. I just need to be careful not to snag them on anything.

In terms of the wales - the fully planked side of the hull will have black hornbeam wood I bought from Vahur in Estonia. Its supposed to bend easier than ebony - we'll see soon enough. The wales will be Pear on the unplanked side.
I also have some of Vahur's black hornbeam. It is sort of waxy so you might want to test adhesion...

Good Morning the stern has been installed which was not as difficult as the bow ! The crown rail at the top of the stern timbers will need to be thinned a bit later The rail extends to allow for the quarter gallery structure later. At this point the framing is complete and wale installation is next up.

Here's another guy from a different league... .

Thanks for the comments and likes ! They are appreciated. I have now modified the construction site and added some balsa reinforcements to the interior of the hull in preparation for next steps - either adding the wales or cutting the gunports. My height gauge arrives today to make the necessary markings.

Good afternoon - the wales are installed. I bought this height gauge to transfer the lines of the wales from the plans to the model. It has a sharpened blade to make the scribe lines which makes transferring measurements easy and accurate.

Here are the results - I left out the rear sections of the wale where it will intersect the rear gunports - Ill apply those after their are cut and installed.

Looks awesome!! Love the height gauge. Need to sharpen my tip it, so it scribes like yours. Thanks for the hint!

Did you do a first layer in pear and a second layer in ebony (or stain/dye a second layer)?

I found my Wales were too thick to do (steam/bend) in one layer of ebony. So, I laid one, half-thick-layer of ebony first. Waiting to do the second layer till I work the lower deck interior and frame cutouts.

Thanks for the comments Brad and Paul and the likes everyone else ! Brad in terms of the wales I did have to laminate - top wale was 2 mm of pear first layer 1.5 mm black hornbeam top layer and the lower wale was 1.5 and 1.5 pear and black hornbeam respectively.

Personally on the next model I will just use dyed pear - the hornbeam wasn't worth the trouble considering I still had to give it a top coat of fiebings black dye to get it to the dark rich color I wanted.
