When cutting out the outlines of the individual pieces, I would use a bandsaw. I would then finish off the cutting by using a disk sander to follow the outline as closely as possible. However it it was easy to neglect the horizontal aspect of the pieces! Sometimes I would unintentionally leave a slight gradient, so when it came to join the pieces together one side may appear to be a good fit but there might be a gap on the opposite side.
