Le Saint Philippe 1693 after Jean-Claude Lemineur (Ancre) in scale 1:48

Paul, what is the phenomena related to your logs? I make a trip to the bathroom, come back and there are 5 more pages to your log?!? ROTF You'd think since this is a stern build the number of pages would be maybe 1/3 of that of your Vasa. I'm taking wagers 2:1 that it's over 150!!

Now, on the comment of "the dog's breakfast", I seem to recall you comparing the inside of my hull as "dogfood", to which I corrected, "more like the food after it passed through the dog". ROTF

So how is your experience with scratch building so far? What you expected?

Oh, by the way, great work, as always. It's like saying to Rory Mcilroy, "great drive".
Hi Ken,

Thanks for the visit. Dogfood? Must have been someone else... :).

Scratch building has NOT been what I expected. Everyone complains about the instructions that come with kits - I figured that with scratch building those issues would fade into the background since there really aren't instructions per se. But here I am fighting with the drawings...

I had what I think was a pretty good day today - but ran out of time to see if I have solved my current impasse. I KNOW it's not without some shortcomings - but will it be acceptable? Might not find out for a while since 'life' will prevent working on the model for a few weeks. I suspect it's good if I take a break anyway.

PS: Rory...I can't figure out how that little guy can move the ball that far...

I don't think Rory is hearing that term very often. Paul is hitting far better on his build than Rory is hitting great drives. McIlroy's fairway hit percentage this year is pretty bad with only 52.4% compared to Morikawa for example at 70% landing on the short grass. :)
Allan
Apples to oranges, my friend. While Rory is only hitting 54% his fairways, he is ranked #2 in driving distance, out driving Collin by 27 yards on average, Collin is ranked #149th. This equates to Rory flying the trouble Collin has to worry about. Scoring average, Rory #2, Collin, #12. Rory has won 3 times in 2025, Pebble Beach, The Players and the Masters, for the career Grand Slam. Collin has ZERO! Enough said on golf.

And here is the bottom line. If I practice my model building skills and focus and practice, practice, practice, I could one day build ships as nice as Paul's. No matter the instruction by the leading names in golf, nor if I go to the driving range 10 times a week, I will NEVER drive the golf ball like Rory. I'd give up modeling if I could. ;)

Actually, after thinking about it, I don't think I have Paul's patience, so both dreams are out of reach, alas....

HA! Allen lives in Florida. Florida golfers don't ask, "how far"? Florida golfers ask, "how dry"?

With that said, I'll take Rory as my A player in the next scramble...

Hey @Hoss6262 - do you remember the old Oldsmobile Scramble? I was once the D player on the national championship winning team at TPC Sawgrass. Our team composite handicap was -4. We made enemies that weekend ROTF.

Nice Paul! CONGRATS! I do remember. What did you guys come in at? I think we referred to teams like yours as "ringers". That would have been my "15 minutes", for sure! My team would have trouble deciding which of my 2 drives to use. ROTF And I never fully understood the "modified USGA handicap".

I have played TPC Sawgrass. I remember back in the 80s, when my game was peaking, relatively speaking, mind you, I wanted to play, but my guys said, "It's too expensive". I think it was $130 at the time. About 10 years later, the price was $375, and they said, "It's too expensive." I went with my brother then. I looked recently, and it's $550 off-season, and $770 peak. RedfaceROTF

My 15 minutes was hitting the green on 17. I can still feel that smile on my face. I was on the wrong side of that ridge, though, with a 50-plus footer and 3 whacked it for a 4. That bogie did nothing to diminish my joy, however. I've been blessed to have played some of the beautiful "Major Championship" courses, although I would not embarrass myself today by stepping inside the ropes.

If they had scrambled teams for model ship building, you'd have to be the A builder! RINGER!! ROTF Thumbsup

It was a two-day final held on two courses to accommodate the field size (Valley course and the Stadium course). It was set up to demolish egos (winning score over 36 was only -19). Our team was built to win. Three former college players (LSU, Oklahoma State, ASU) plus me. We all lived in the Chicago area. I was a known amateur tournament golfer who was thought to be a reliable fourth with a good iron game who could putt. At that level scrambles hardly need anyone with a good short game - a real curiosity in golf: drive, approach, putt only.

The multiplier for adjusted handicaps had a flaw in it that favored guys with plus handicaps (I was the only guy on our team who did not have a plus handicap ).

I found this from the practice round at Sawgrass CC. Yes, that IS a persimmon driver. How I miss fast-twitch fibers ROTF.

By the way, entry fee for the regional and sectionals was $40. $110 for the two-day final :).

I love it! Great looking finish, by the way. Are you still that flexible? :)

Every year we have a family reunion, which one of my sisters always hosts. She lives in Geneseo, Illinois, just outside of Moline and the Quad Cities. I'm headed out there the week after next. While there, we always play a 2-man scramble at TPC Deere Run in Silvis. About 12-16 usually play out of the 60 or so family members at the reunion. It's nice because it usually follows the John Deere Classic by a couple of weeks.

Anyway, thanks for sharing, Paul, and sorry to hijack your build log.

We interrupt today's broadcast of the Golf Channel with breaking news: just moments ago American hobbyist Paul Kattner declared victory over a small wooden ship.

This announcement is most unexpected as it was only one short week ago, during a wellness check initiated by his devoted wife of forty years, that agents overheard Dr. Kattner run together a string of profane words rarely heard in civilized society. This from an eyewitness, "never before have I heard profanity elevated to the level of art. The subject's ability to keep tempo, rhythm, and crescendo in such perfect balance while simultaneously providing such breadth of vulgarity...it was breathtaking. The man is a walking thesaurus of obscenity!"

:rolleyes:ROTF:rolleyes:ROTF:rolleyes: Redface

Anyway, here's way too many pictures of the butt end of a ship model:

Yes, I know I'm not the first guy on the planet to fair a few frames ROTF - but I'm strangely delighted by this particular outcome considering the dark places I traveled through to get here.

I'm checking out for a bit to go on a family fishing trip next week, but I'll be back as long as I survive fishing with three grandchildren in the boat at the same time. Model on! And thanks very much for stopping by!

That is a really very nice ships butt end, Mr. Dr. Paul Kattner! Fist I though that he went into the world of 3D computer design. But no, this is real handwork. Chapeaux.
Regards, Peter

I never realized that profanity could be such an amazing modifier to building a kit ! I guess I need to practice a lot more. ROTF

Breaking News Update: Not only has Dr. Paul Kattner (a.c.a. mon ami) declared victory, but photographic evidence confirms it; this is not just a win - it's a masterclass in wooden ship combat. Look at those frames! Elegant, aligned, and smoother than a David Gilmour solo while playing Comfortably Numb.

One insider reports that Paul was last seen sharpening his drawknife while muttering, “You call that a rabbet? I call that a suggestion!” Clearly, this man has gone from cursing the hull to mastering it like a seasoned shipwright.

Bravo, mon ami! If you survive fishing, I will wait for your next update ;)

Thank you very much, Peter. Sometimes we win a battle...

Well, I'd never endorse profanity...but sometimes it's the healthiest response (or at least the most viable response).

And to think you started this build with rough cut planks of wood! Outstanding my friend!
Yup. Pretty satisfying.

ROTF You made me laugh at myself, Jim! Well played!

Clean work as always. I really like to see such result in the tree! I am looking forward to the continuation, and for now, relax and catch something big ;) Anchor

Thanks, Sergey!

What do you use to fare?
Hi Vic! Well, mostly sanding blocks. I have some that are made of rubber in various profiles, and I wrap sandpaper around them (80-120-220). I also have some scrapers that help me get into places where it's hard to hand sand. I would be embarrassed to confess how many hours I put into fairing this hull given the fact that the entire outer surface will be planked . But it gives me time to think...

That’s a lot of elbow grease!

I need more thinking time than most people ROTF.
I pre-beveled the frames to the patterns from the monograph so it was probably within a mm or so when I started. That is: except for the most aft frame. After a series of failures this one was made crazy oversized and shaped in situ. I did use a rotary tool to wrangle that one before hand sanding. I’ve seen people do some fairing using a sanding disc/pad with a right angle tool but I don’t have one and wasn’t sure I wanted to buy one just for this. If I build a bigger model then getting one is probably a good call.
