M/S Gun Boat Philadelphia [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hi all, progress pictures of the Gunboat Philadelphia, showing the 9pounder and 12 pounder gun carriages and slide dry fitted, the mast partner using the supplied jig and after takeing out the jig, also showing the thru bolts for rigging, need to find small washers for the exteroer thru bolts, also the SHOT GARLAND RACKS WITH HEIGHT FIXTURE glued in place the fisture is removed after the glue drys, also note that I took some artistic liberty by installing the commings at the aft and stern, just looks better, I am getting ready to put the gun barrels and something I dread is the rigging of the guns when that portion is complete will do the cap rails an conentrate on my BLANFORD AND MATTHEW BUILDS, as always comments and critisims wanted ONLY WAY TO LEARN

No critics, Don. Everything looks great! Perhaps...one....small...and not even a critic...The pictures where a bit blurry. If you can try to make them sharp for the next time that would be great, If not, no biggie...will see your work anyway. :p
 
takeing a break on my Blanford build, making some progress but slowly at this stage now I know why I dislike rigging after doing the lower deadeys, and the 9 pounder guns rigging, the 12 pounder carriage and slide is dry fitted, also showing my method of getting the kinks out of the rigging line after first
 
I do not know what just happened, some mistake by me so I will try again, the progress on the gunboat philidelphia, showing the lower deadeyes and the rigging of the 9 pounder guns the 12 pounder carriage and slide are dry fitted and have to be rigged will do that latter today, also showing my method of getting the kinks out of the rigging line, this is after rubbing the line with diluted white PVA glue, now comes my main question so far it is a pretty good model, but if I rig it it will not be so good, combination of ignorance and old age (81 this month), I can do the masts and yards OK but not the rigging, my question after doing some reasearch on this type of Gunboat is the sails were not used often but was rowed, where were the masts and yards stored, and how best to show the model, using stub masts, just the masts and yards or just the hull, would like to do the masts and yards but would it the model look unfinished, NEED HELP ON THIS ONE ANYONE PLEASE.

Hi Don. Masts and yards without rigging would look model unfinished IMHO. If you decided to show without masts, then it is a good idea to show oars. In this case mast and spars\yards usually stored on the deck. You can show, however, just part of the mast like admiralty stile.
 
more progress on the GUNBOAT PHILADELPHIA, showing the 9 pounder and the 12 pouder guns in place and my feeble attempt at rigging the guns, I guess it has to be acceptable can not do any better, so the outcome and JIMS IDEA of the stub masts is the way I am going also showing the start of the cap rails on the port side ad dry fitting on the starboard side, again thanks to Jim I did my first oil on the cap rails using WATCO DANISH OIL the one the have with colors using Jims directions I am happy with the outcome like Jim Ppaint and Don is A BIG NO as always all coments are more then welcome

This one is for Jim, Picture of the midship cap rail something happened to the finish on this piece as at one time it was like the rest of the cap rails I used the WATCO DANISH OIL FINISH (DARK WALNUT), somehow it lost the stain finish, i did not think it would be so noticble can not take everything apart, as I still have the starboard side to apply finish to can I just sand it using 1000 grit sandpaper and redo the finish. THANKS Don
 
Hi Don, sorry for the trouble my friend. I am not sure why this happened. The only I can think off is the cap rails where from different wood, not necessary from different species of wood, jut two different batches. You can try to varnish again (the light cap rail) and see if it make a difference, but yes, please sand it first.
This is why I always recommend testing on a scrap piece first, to see the results.
