Gratings!
The makers of wood kits supply pieces of very thin 'planks' cut with spaces slots (like a comb). One slots over the other to create the effect of a grating.
I have two scratch builds on the go and making the fine cuts are a nightmare.
But, is this also the way gratings were actually made? Or is it a case of the best option for the kit maker.
I can't find any information at all in any of my books that show how the real gratings were made.
Can any one help?

In my building log of my Granado we had a longer discussion about gratings, also with several links to publications and also sketches which are helping maybe

These are some posts - but please read also in between

Thank you Uwe, very helpful indeed.

Figure below shows "A grating as made in the time of the 'Irene.'" This is from the book by E.W. Petrejus "Modelling the Brig-of-War Irene. She was a Dutch 10-gun brig built in 1806 in England as HMS Grasshopper. Petrejus says that gratings were made of heavy fir ledges laid athwartship crossed by oak battens of the same breadth but much thinner. He also says that properly made gratings look extremely well on a model but it is a "careful, tedious job." Fair winds!

This sketch is showing how the modeler Petrejus made the gratings of his model - very good hint

1. Best option for the kit maker.
2. Go to the search function on the NRJ website.
3. 4 or 5 years ago there was a very detailed article on how to make gratings.
4. The process is, more or less, like they were really made.
5. The process is very flexible; you can make any quantity, any size, etc.

Hello Bill 36
Looks like this is a 'Bill' thing!
Do you by chance have a link to the article?
