My 1/72 scale aircraft

Beautiful display! But ... even with your new shelves, you still have no space to add any more! ROTF
True! I am adding more shelves to my room! ;) In addition, the 1/16 scale Sopwith Camel will be moving and free up that shelf. Also the shelf with German WW2 aircraft has one open slot that is awaiting my build of the Heinkel 112 V10.

I recently read on kindle a collection of short historic fiction books about the development of World War I combat aircraft. I was surprised to learn that the airplanes that we associate with the war; the Sopwith Camel, Spad, and Fokker VII appeared late in the war.

The British aircraft that fought during the first couple of years were the “flying box kites” with pusher engines. Are there 1/72 scale kits of these earlier planes, and if so, do you plan to add them to your collection?

They have early Albatross, Phalz, Eindecker and Nieuport aircraft in 1/72, but I have not seen any of the type you described. It’s probably a marketing thing. They know the popular aircraft will sell. ;)
But I’m looking to create a historical collection that encompasses even the eclectic and unpopular aircraft. I’m starting with the more popular aircraft first. So yes, I would buy one if I can find one.
I have already purchased a few less popular aircraft and some by model companies I am not familiar with. This is a roll of the dice, but at this point I have enough experience to make a decent model out of almost anything. It’s just a matter of doing more work, making parts fit, using putty, creating parts or using spare parts, etc.
In addition, thus far I have only built military aircraft. I may add some non military aircraft in the future.

That’s a fine collection of aircraft, Dean. You have some unusual paint schemes too. Very nice, very nice indeed.

Thank you Smithy! I am going for diversity as well, and sometimes pick a less common paint scheme, like on the Bristol Bulldog and Airacobra.

I have never seen a yellow BF110 before. Was it a trainer?
It is not yellow…it is a BF110 Tropical, so it is a sand color, only the engine cowlings are yellow.

More pictures….

I suppose at certain angles my sand color has a yellow tint to it. In fact I think the engine cowlings may need another coat of yellow to help differentiate?
Keep in mind I am color blind, so I try my best on the colors. ;)

I am excited to say, that even though I am not building any aircraft at the moment, I have just ordered more to add to my collection!

The following are on the way:
ww2
1) SB2C Helldiver
2) B-25J Mitchell
3) MC.202 Folgore
biplane
4) Stampe SV.4B (Belgian 2 seat bi-plane)
jets
5) F-104 Starfighter
6) A-6E Intruder
7) AV-8A Harrier
8) A-10A Thunderbolt II
9) F-5E Tiger II
10) F-8E Crusader
11) F9F-3 Panther
12) F-100C Super Sabre
13) A-37 Dragonfly

In boxes already waiting are:
1) P-35 Seversky
2) F7F Tigercat
3) B-17G Flying Fortress
4) TBD-1 Devastator
5) Ki-44II Shoki
6) Heinkel 112 V10
7) P-51 Mustang (Eduard Royal Class dual combo)
8) Boulton Paul Balliol T.2
9) Mosquito FB MkVI
10) Vengeance Mk II
11) Ms 406
12) Yak-3
13) RE 2001 Falco II
14) Fokker D VII
15) Albatross DII
16) Fokker E.IV
17) Avia B534 early (Eduard dual combo)
18) SE5a RAF
19) Bristol F2B
20) Sopwith Camel F1
21) N.A.F N3N-3

What does that mean? I probably need to get busy building airplanes again! ROTF
I currently have 65 built and on the shelves. I have 21 in boxes waiting and 13 more on the way. So I am at a total of 99 aircraft and if you add the extra P-51 in the dual combo kit, that will total 100 aircraft once they are all built.
However I am just getting started on the jets! Category wise, I have 17 jets, with at least another 11 minimum on my list for future purchases.
Display wise, I have to add some wall shelves. I plan to add 18 feet of wall shelves that should hold at least 30 jets. Moving the 1/16 scale Camel and the jets will open up 3 shelves on my current display for the WW1/biplane and WW2 categories. That is the equivalent of 24 more aircraft that can be added on those shelves.
That should get me by for the next year or two depending how fast I build them. ;)

In short...stay tuned...many more builds to come!

I keep a spreadsheet so I can track my collection...

Aircraft are color coded and grouped by nationality, QTY in yellow are built and on the shelf, QTY in white are in the box waiting to be built.
Numbers in yellow are on order and currently being shipped. As I receive them, I change that to white.
And finally the ones listed at the bottom of each category are on my wish list to purchase. Those are constantly being added to and moved once ordered.
And you thought I just built aircraft! ROTF

Problem solved…I added 9 ft of 12” shelves on the wall. And I added a corner shelf for the 1/16 Camel.

The jets are now on the wall shelves. WW1/biplanes have the top two shelves.
WW2 are on the remaining shelves.
I now have room for at least 13 more WW1 aircraft, 17 WW2 aircraft and 8 jets. That will hold what I have in boxes now.
Further additions will require another 9ft of 12” shelves approx 10-12” above the current wall shelves.
And when I build my other 1/16 scale biplanes, I will add more corner shelves above the Camel.
So I have plenty of room for further growth! ROTF

The wall shelves are a great addition. How many more rows up would you go?

Thanks Daniel. I thought about it…always thinking ahead…and I would only go one more for aircraft, because after that you really won’t be able to see them well. But I can add another shelve above that to put my ships on and that will open up the shelves around the top of my desk. So as far as aircraft display goes, I can gain another 9 ft of shelves above the current one and then another 5-6 ft of shelves around my desk. ;)

I wanted to share some good movies and documentaries about aircraft that have good flying scenes in them.

These are just some of the ones I have watched recently. ;)
