My 1/72 scale aircraft

I'm amazed at how smooth and wrinkle-free you can get that foil, especially on such large areas. Just beautiful! Have you ever had any issues with the adhesive failing over time and the foil starting to peel at the edges?
The larger the pieces, the more difficult it becomes. Removing it from the backing can stretch it because it’s so thin. And because it’s so thin it can tear, stretch and wrinkle. So you have to center the piece, then choose a side to start pressing down and carefully working across the piece evenly being careful not to stretch or wrinkle. I find starting with my finger tip first, to tack it in place on the first edge, and then coming behind that with a q-tip to press it down and conform to surface irregularities, works best. If I have tiny areas that the q-tip can’t reach well, then I use the end of my toothpick with a flat surface cut at an angle to burnish the foil. It will stretch over bumps and fins, etc. very well. To do this without creating wrinkles takes a little practice.
My success has been mostly because I am doing small sections at a time and cutting the edges to the panel lines. That way there is no overlap of pieces and no large pieces.
The edges of wings have to be overlapped a little bit to help hold it on. The adhesive is great for holding it down, but not very strong for edges. If you have too much overlap, the thickness change will show. It’s all a delicate balance. This was an experiment mostly to use the Bare-Metal and gain experience. I’m not sure I want to do another aircraft with it, however I won’t rule it out either, as I have a few upcoming builds that would look good with it. ;)
And finally I want to see how decal adhesion and clear coat work with it. ;)

Out of curiosity, I decided to make a list of the aircraft I built since starting this ongoing build log.
In order of builds:
P-47D Razorback
Spad XIII
Sopwith F.1/3 Comic
Junkers D.I
Bristol Bulldog
P-36A Hawk
P-39Q Airacobra
Pfalz D.IIIa
BT-13 Valiant
Boulton Paul Balliol T.2
F-5E Tiger II
Spitfire Mk V Tropical
Fokker D.VII
F-86D Sabre Dog

The F-86D should be completed within a week. That will be 14 builds in 5 months. So... despite side projects and an illness, I managed almost 3 builds per month.
With 40 kits in boxes and more on the way, it's safe to say I will remain busy for quite some time! ;)

And thanks for following along and keeping me motivated!

Update…
All landing gear, struts and doors are finished and ready to go on the model.

A lot of little pieces, but will look good once on the airplane.
Next I started putting some of the decals on…

The adhesion is very good and I think they are going to be fine. I just don’t trust decals without clear coat protection. I have had them stick to fingers when handling the airplane and come off in the past prior to using clear coat. My only concern now is how the metal will look with a matte clear coat. I will test on a panel.
Still waiting on the Bare-Metal, it seems the winter weather has slowed down shipping in certain areas due to snow and ice conditions. Oh well…hopefully soon my order will arrive and I can finish the build. ;)

due to the metal finish, you might consider a gloss coat of clear.
I’m actually surprised how well the decals adhered to the metal. I tested them and when handling the airplane they did not come off. So I might not add any clear coat, yet to be determined because I will do one small panel and see what it looks like. ;)
In addition, I don’t have any gloss clear as I always use matte or semigloss.

Finally finished the F-86D Sabre Dog!
Because I chose to cover it with Bare-Metal instead of painting it, that cost me an extra week of time. That and running out and having to wait for my order of more.
Anyway, I painted the tail and finished the decals. So even though this build was longer than anticipated, I am still happy with the end result.

I put some matte varnish on a few panels here and there for realism.
And here it is next to my F-86 Sabre…I really love the nose on the D version.

Now I have 10 jets built, and 70 aircraft total finished.

I added another row of shelves for future additions. ;)
Thanks for your interest and input. I am deciding what’s next…I have enjoyed switching to jets for a while. However my Mosquito is waiting. ;)

Your Saber Dog looks great.
Now that you have the two kits next to each other, I never noticed the slight difference in the back of the canopy between the two models of Saber. :)
If you're going to do the English Mosquito, you should consider also doing the German version of their Moskito, the TA154. :) I understand they tried to duplicate the success of the English one, but the German version fell short of the desired performance, so they didn't build many. I have both in 1/48.

Thank you! The tail and especially the elevators are different as well. Most noticeable difference being the nose.
The F-86D Sabre is one of my favorites of the early jets.
I have the DeHavilland Mosquito I have been wanting to build, but it will not be an easy or quick build. So I may knock out a few quick builds before getting into a lengthy one. My B-17 and B-25 will be lengthy as well.
Right now I am eyeing my Seversky P-35. That would be a nice one to get on the shelf. ;)
Sounds like you have a few 1/48 aircraft models. Are you still building aircraft models?
