A superbly detailed account of this 3rd rate Warship launched in 1678.

ANSON'S NAVY
Building a Fleet for Empire 1744 - 1763
By Brian Lavery.

H/B 208 pages (not the miss quoted 288p)

Another Superb book, you wouldn't expect any less by Brian Lavery.

This takes on the reforms within the admiralty in this period. I say admiralty as a lot of these reforms sadly can't be attributed to certain person/s.

From Shipbuilding through Officer's, ships crews, Craft, shipboard life, Dockyards, fleets, strategy & tactics etc.. there is a thorough research into this period in British Naval history.

Below again is just some of the information, plates and drawings within this brilliant book.

New on my bookshelves.

De Nederlandsche Scheeps-Bouw-Konst Open Gestelt (1697) by Cornelis van Yk. (transl: The Art of Dutch Shipbuilding Revealed.)

This facsimile edition from Langerveld, Rotterdam probably dates from around 1970.

Cornelis van Yk was a seventeenth-century schip carpenter/builder who learned his trade at the VOC (Dutch East India Company) shipyard in Delfshaven. Like Nicolaes Witsen before him he was one of the few who documented 17th century shipbuilding in the Netherlands.
Most of the drawings in this book are done by Jan Luyken and his son Caspar Luyken.

the cost of this book

Based on a casual search - can you afford an automobile?

~£13K aka ~$16K

(Yes, I here am new...)
These were the prices of original books or editions
facsimile edition are much cheaper - so you do not have to sell your car

BTW: welcome to the forum

the cost of this book
Of course it's a facsimile, I mentioned that in my post. I acquired this book privately for € 20,00. In the Netherlands there are several copies for sale starting from € 25.00 at the second-hand book site below. Some of these sellers will undoubtedly ship internationally. Be aware that there are several different editions, there is also a paperback edition. The one I got and that is shown in my post above has the advantage that the double page spreads are leaf-bound, so there is no seam in the middle. That is true to how it was done in the 17th century.

You have to be Dutch or read Dutch. Translation engines can't handle the old Dutch. And even for Dutch people it is not easy to read.

There are online links to this book you can read or download.
The paper version is always better but the online also have a search ability.

Witsen's version

I added one to the collection again: "Pepys's Navy - Ships, Men & Warfare 1649-1689"

Found it on the site of boekwinkeltjes.nl as just mentioned by @Hatteras in # 790.
A bargain for only € 12,= (new).
a real bargain for this interesting book.

Added another book to my collection, "First Rate - The Greatest Warships of the Age of Sail" by Rif Winfield.

Uwe posted a review of this book :

I am very happy with this new acquisition, especially since this book is signed by the author.

The Dutch Explorations of Australia, 1605-1756 by Willem C. H. Robert. Published by Philo Press, Amsterdam in 1973.

The title speaks for itself. The nice thing about this book is that it comes with six separate fold-out maps. These depict the manuscript-charts of the ships Pera, Arnhem, Vliegende Swaen, Vossenbos, Wajer, Nova Hollandia and Duijffke (Duyfken).

I added a couple of reference books to my bookshelf in the serie of "Warships in the Age of Sail"

"French Warships in the Age of Sail 1626-1786" (ISBN 9781473893511) and "French Warships in the Age of Sail 1786-1861" (ISBN 9781848322042)

20240301_185013_resized.jpg

And also "Spanish Warships in the Age of Sail 1700-1860" (ISBN 9781526790781)

20240301_185208_resized.jpg

At the moment these books are still quite affordable, the earlier editions of the "British" and to a somewhat lesser extent the "Dutch" and "Russian" have increased significantly in price.
