Norske Løve, Billing Boats, Scale 1:75

The exceptional quality and meticulousness of your work pleasantly surprised me. Every detail is carefully thought out and executed with remarkable precision. It is a true pleasure to admire such mastery and passion for naval modeling. Congratulations on this excellent work that inspires and commands respect!

Norske Løve update: So, finally back at the workshop again after quite a long break, testing the new plank clamps. Just wish I've seen these earlier, works like a charm with pre drilling Ø1,1 - 1,2mm and a lot easier to handle than my home made clamps with slot screws.

Hello Krister_L, I am Noël Luc from Belgium and I am currently building the Norske Love. I am very interested in the wooden clamps that you are using in the picture. My hull has been completely closed for a week and I wish I had had these clamps earlier. Can you tell me where and from which company I could order and have these clamps delivered? I will be able to use them when building my next boat! I have not seen these clamps in Belgium yet! Maybe you have already come across my construction of my Norske Love on this forum! Hopefully you can help me to buy these clamps! Your planking looks great!! Greetings from Belgium!!

Hello Noël
Sorry to say, I have missed you build log, I´ll start looking for it immediately :)
Actually I've used two different set of clamps, one that is home-made and one that I bought from JoJo shiffsmodellbau in Germany. The clamps that I bought has the advantage of being mounted by hand, for my hand made I need a screw driver. As for the purchased ones I also completed with som simple wooden parts where it is too narrow between the planks for the metal part. First picture shows the purchased set and second picture shows one of my home made ones.

Krister, after you use it several times, let me know how you like it or not. I might order it as I don't have a drill press. Magic Mike
Hi again Mike
Now I've been using the small drill press a little and I find it surprisingly good to handle. The biggest advantage is the size of it, very easy to bring up or put away when I need to drill a straight hole perpendicular to the surface. The speed regulator and On-Off unit might seem a bit plastic, but I'm not too worried about that. The chuck handles drillbits from 0,3 to 4mm and torque seems to be enough. Only thing I'm missing is a few holes in the table to attach some guide bars or a small vise, but I'll fix it myself.

While waiting for the glue to dry on some planks, I made a testmilling of the grooves in the sidepiece of a stair and it works very good. Will get some proper endmills by mail tomorrow. I also went digging deep into a few old boxes and found some carvings I did for the first Norske Løve, which I never finished, they might come in quite handy now :-)

Noel and Krister, the set of 10 all-metal planking clamps are also available from Micro Mark. Magic Mike

Krister, thanks for the review and follow up. I'm going to order the same unit but I also noticed the small bench vices they had. Have you checked them out? Mike

Norske Løve update:
Started to put together the stairs while waiting for plank glue to dry, first stair finished and oak stained.

Hi Krister_L, the planking of the hull is really incredibly well done!! I see that you are also very well equipped with various machines! The sculpting of the wood with the figures is beautiful, also Dean62 has made such decorations!! I wish I could do that too! I will definitely continue to follow the further construction of your Norske Love! Greetings from Belgium

Thank you Noël.

Those carvings were made many years ago, at my first attempt to build the Norske Løve, maybe 35-40 yrs ago. I just found them in an old toolbox I have, (also found some of the tools I used at that time). Today I have a little bit better tools so I might give it a go again to see if I can shapen them up a little :)

Norske Løve smaller update and a tip from the coach :). I have experienced that when I try to clamp down the plank on the most curvy part of the frames, the clamp is only putting pressure on one edge of the plank. I have tried with putting an additional piece of wood underneath the heel of the clamp and it has worked good, but is a bit cumbersome. Today though, I found a piece of 5x5mm pear wood and decided to make some new clamps with a higher heel than on the metallic ones, and it works perfect, now I have the same pressure over the whole width of the plank.

That’s a function of the distance, the radius and board thickness. So the required height is going to be different and the safe bet is more height as you learned! ;)
