:oops: What! But! What? How? Look! No! But! Oh! (speechless)

~~~~~~~~~~
The little boy inside me is screaming “I want THAT for Christmas!”
The stern father in me replies “It’s too big a project for you. You’d never stick with it. And you keep telling me Victory is boring because everyone does it.”
The indulgent mother in me says “Oh why not, if it makes you happy, have it!”
~~~~~~~~~~

The sensible adult in me says:

That is a remarkable achievement by AL. I’ve rarely seen anything so impressive. There’s an entire wooden world in that box.

There’s also a lot of repetition, all those guns for example and I don’t enjoy things like that. I personally think the ship is a very ugly vessel, not something like a clipper or a xebec that I’d fall in love with.

The simplified framing and laser engraved decks are an artistic compromise for sure but perhaps that balances the repetition aspect? I wouldn’t be spending a year of build time planking decks?

This model perhaps provides the beauty of wood construction with the intricate interior detailing available in top end plastic armour kits. I don’t see any plastic though, which is good. Guns should be metal in my opinion! Is it the best of both modelling worlds?

€1300? Is that a consideration. Not really. I’ve got the money, honey, and I’ve certainly got the time. Having seen the unboxing and an outstandingly well built one in AL’s videos, I think that is a fair price. And if I buy it, drool over it for a few years and ultimately never build it, my children can sell it for a lot more than that.

As you can tell, I’m torn. I can’t make up my mind. There’s a lot of fear of missing out going on too. How many will be available and for how long?

I’m perfectly balanced on the very sharp knife edge between YES and NO and it’s painful up here! However, I’m not asking for advice, encouragement, injunctions or permissions. It’s my decision to make.

~~~~~~~~~~
Stepping back a little I find that this is just a toy. We all take our hobbies seriously but let’s remember, it’s only an entertainment, a source of pleasure. It’s not important like food, shelter etc. The decision should be easy.
So what I have to ask myself is “Would I ENJOY buying, owning, possibly building this kit OR would it ultimately bring net frustration and regret? And either answer must be a guess.
Again, it’s only a toy. For goodness sake, I’ve proposed marriage to people with less thinking about the consequences! (With disastrous results though ROTFROTF) I have bought big kits before and later regretted the impulse when I’ve messed up or lost interest and finally trashed them.
The little boy and the indulgent mother say YES.
The stern father says No
The adult, who is determined to have the casting vote and make a decision based on real life experience and self knowledge says…
Your ADHD is showing ROTF ROTF ROTF.
Later today we will make public the first videos of the instructions... maybe that will help the little boy and the indulgent mother impose their will ROTF
I’ve had a look at the videos and they have helped me arrive at decision based on my knowledge of my own character strengths and weaknesses.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the kit, and nothing wrong with me either, but the kit and I don’t match. I’m impulsive, good at starting things, less interested by long repetitive tasks. I take a big bite of my burger and then want my ice cream and a fast exit!
This project needs builders with determination and application. People who might be happy to take an hour to eat a bowlful of special fried rice, a grain at a time, with chopsticks.
I’m actually struggling to stick with my current small build after only half a year.
Good as it undoubtedly is, this isn’t the kit for me.
Great as it is, this simply isn’t the kit for me. (I wouldn’t want to own a Rolls Royce either:confused:)
It's clear that this kit is a big challenge in many aspects, is not for everybody at every moment. Just building and rigging 104 cannons and carronades can drive you crazy.
In the other hand this can be an incredible intermitent, satisfying build for many years while you combine it with other projects.
Well, well....this has caught me by surprise and has brought confusion into my plans. I had just determined that the Caldercraft Victory would be my next addition to the drydock over the Occre Victory and now this.....wow, I am very impressed with this kit...the presentation videos are outstanding. I am not completely sold on the open hull....but boy, I love a lot of things with this kit. I have to do a lot of research on this now. Well done AL.
We love big scale ships, but imagine our Trafalgar collection of Santisima, Santa Ana, Victory, Nepomuceno and those that could come at a bigger scale.
Very few people would have enough space to even think about it.
I agree that space is a problem for a large number of modelers, but there is also an important growing market for big ships in 1:48 scale kits ( lengths 1.500 mm or more ), currently partially served by Chinese manufacturers.
Even considering the high costs for new projects, and price for consumers , I believe it is a subject to think about in the medium term, including as an option the excellent idea of upgrading with lighting, internal view and figures.
A superlative effort by AL – Indeed probably needing 2000+ hours for building this example. Most of which would be very enjoyable IMO. Some builders will probably spend even more time adding actual deck planking (I would), as well as making excellent use of an airbrush, as opposed to hand brushing so many panels. The results would be so excellent given the visual access to the interior decks.
A very serious purchase consideration on my part – even though I was determined to do a Viking ship next – just for something totally “new mentally”.
I’ve always wanted to build a Victory but they were too intimidating for me in order to get it looking as they should. I’ve followed so many excellent examples that I knew, that I could never reach those needed skill sets - This AL kit removes, for me, most of those intimidations.
And, no -- I (We) absolutely have no available real estate for this one, let alone for my current SotS…..
The AL Victory would create an international territorial war in our two floor condo (My sweetheart is from Brazil). Her business is Interior Design – she has designed for some well-known individual’s residences, including doing some interior work in a mega yacht, and some office spaces. She has suggested that my current SotS could be stored in the garage,,,,,yikes
So, the conundrum has not been solved – so far. As Smithy said – kid in one ear – adult in the other.
And the real price out-the-door --- kit, lights, figures, adding "needed" third party deck plankings, ropes, blocks, sail material -- closer to $2,000+ USD
Still IMO at about $1.00 per hour of entertainment not such a bad deal IMHO...
Cheers,
Having moaned about it being 'another' Victory, it is rather an impressive model and I echo your sentiments above ROTF
I see what you did there.
OcCre almost sold all of their stock .
so between al the other victory's out there
it will be probably a winner.
As novice builder i'm up to the challenge.
And it's my birthday in about a month.
And i love big presents.
::WINK::
If I were to even start thinking about buying this kit, I need to know that there is a proper, complete build description.
If I understood it correctly, AL only offers a description in the form of video films and has so far presented 13 such. It's ok with videos but where are the rest of them?
Fair point....I have reviewed most of the videos presented so far and I do like them. They are easy to follow and appear to show a great amount of detail. Now, do the videos cover everything???? I imagine not. I would love more instructions....but I think the manufacturer is assuming that the builder will be experienced and that the videos will suffice and there are no plans to include detailed written instructions......
AL can confirm this....
Video instructions cover the assembly of the model from A to Z, from the first part of the keel to the last flag and everything in the middle. At the moment these videos are being edited and published, there will be a total of around 90 videos.
You may like the video assembly instructions more or less, but we guarantee that every part of the model is explained in detail inside them.
We understand that you may have the wrong idea because of "video instructions" or tutorials from other brands on the market. We invite you to watch the series of videos that we are publishing, they include all the part numbers, instructions, tips, tasks to be made, measurements, technical drawings, in short, 100% complete assembly instructions and in our opinion, clearly superior to traditional step by step with pictures.
It's ok with videos for me, I'm eagerly waiting for all of them to be published.
I bought Vasa via Dagostini with partial deliveries. There you got a whole binder with printed instructions, unfortunately no drawings. Also had problems with getting a delivery, but in the end it was resolved via a personal contact.
