Well I simply could not turn down the opportunity to build another one of my favorite classic race cars in 1:8 scale.
After building the Lotus 72, I know what to expect from a Pocher kit. And that’s quality and due diligence on research and design. In fact they actually scanned a 917 chassis with a lazer to get everything right!
If you don’t know the history of the Porsche 917, I recommend you get online, read and watch videos of this legendary race car built by Porsche to compete with Ferrari. It has a flat 12 cylinder engine, and that put out serious horsepower, capable of going approximately 246 miles an hour at LeMans. The turbo version engine had over 1,000 hp and could accelerate from a stop to 60 in about 2.6 seconds!
This model is based on the exact car (917K), which is the short tail version, that Derek Bell and Jo Siffert drove at the 1000km Monza. It has the vertical stabilizers that helped with stability at high speed. And over 200mph is high speed! ;)
Anyway, I encourage you to watch videos of it at the track so you can hear the music the flat 12 makes! ;)

Another huge box…

Let’s look at the contents briefly for now…

There is one cardboard box with plastic parts, tires, accessories, etc.

It is full of bags with parts on sprues. No need to dig thru and look at all of it…it’s a lot! The box is actually heavy!

Next is a container with metal parts…

These look to be all tubular chassis components.

And finally a larger container of metal parts…

This has the main body parts and some engine, transmission and exhaust parts.

That’s it for now. No need to show everything because it will all show up in the build…a part at a time, step by step.

Now for the build… if you followed my Lotus 72D build log, then you know I will be painting and detailing every part of this car as I see a need, for the most realistic outcome I can achieve. This car deserves nothing less.
To see people put together these kits and not paint anything actually makes me cringe! You just bought an expensive toy car in that case. Because IMO it looks like a toy without adding details for realism. So I intend to treat it like any other model kit in that aspect. ;)

As far as the actual build start goes…
I am currently working on the NL ship and have a good head of steam. And I have a P-38 Lightning build on hold waiting on more wood.
So how soon I switch to this project remains to be seen. It will be calling my name, as I really love this car! ;)

So you may see me here again sooner than later.

Nicer to see ‘you could not resist …….’. A good choice, Dean. And with the extra added painting and details it will be a special.
Regards, Peter

Thanks Peter!
Glad I found you here. Your last Pocher build was just awesome so really looking forward to your 917 build!
Thanks Daniel, I too am looking forward to building this car!

they had them on sale for $899.99, and they are normally $1199.99
Yep - I know - and I wish I could do this, but I need to do some serious thinking on it. Pocher also has a Pagini Utopia. But is even more expensive. Both are super nice.

Well the Porsche 917K is one of my favorites and in the Gulf livery, I couldn’t pass it up, especially on sale! Different car or different livery, and I would not be tempted! ;)

I have started gathering some reference photos, so I know what colors the different parts are supposed to be. The kit gives you one solid color for each molded part, and so I will be doing a lot of painting.

This is just a few photos that I found.

Currently I am still making headway on my Norske Love ship build. And the P-38 is on hold.
I want to get to certain point on the ship before I start this build.
The ship will take another year or two to finish. The P-38 probably 6 months to a year to complete.
This kit will only take a few months.
So at some point soon I will switch to this build and complete it before going back to the other two. So that’s my logic, knock out the short build first. ;)
