In very short time I will post a detailed unboxing and kit review ...... so stay tuned Thumbsup

Some days ago I received my "helping hands", with a magnetic base and four additional magnetic pillars to fix something (for the photo I took a scrapper to show, but also electronic boards etc.)

I like the 4 extra holder bits...now I have purchase envy.

Very nice unit, It has some cool features- two short and two long arms, the magnetic holders and the rubber/plastic protectors over the jaws.

I inherited some tools from my Father in law. He has Alzheimer’s and doesn’t do wood working any more. Does anyone know what this is? It has two calipers on each end and a piece of aluminum flat bar 7mm thick. I’m guessing some sort of leveling instrument but I’m not sure.View attachment 202076
Hi Chris,

The 2 calliper heads look like micrometer heads to me, I am wondering if it is some sort of taper setting tool, just an idea.

Cheers,
Stephen.

Another possibility is that the board with the calipers could be used for testing levels for accuracy. The board would mount on the bench or in a vise with the calipers pointing upward. A level is set on the caliper shafts and the calipers adjusted as needed to get a precise "level" reading on the level, Then the level is inverted on the calipers and the level reading should still be correct. If it is not, the bubble tubes in the level must be adjusted, if possible. Not all levels have adjusters for the bubble tubes. A similar test can be done with the level, and caliper board, vertical to check the accuracy of the bubble tubes for that position. I'm not sure about checking accuracy of bubble tubes for 45 degree angles.

An alternative to finding a level surface or direction of drop is to put a ball bearing down and watch the direction of travel. I used a ball bearing three inches in diameter to investigate the settlement of concrete slabs in buildings following a series of earthquakes in a community college which had been partially built on fill materials over existing drainage ways which created unequal settlement of columns' footings stressing connected beams.
The ball was very accurate with the travel paths drawn onto floor plans in isolating settlements. I still use that to quickly check a work surface for level. Just an alternative suggestion. Rich (PT-2)
