Re: Royal William 1/48 scale

Thanks to all for the supporting messages and best wishes, I guess I just have to behave myself for awhile.
The Doctor was asking what had happened and I said,
I guess the right hand didn't know what the left hand had been doing, and he said well you still have a sense of humour,

Best regards John,

onto the bowsprit shrouds,

I had some small hooks I had bought but when I put any tension on them they gave way, so I made some from one mm brass as above,

I think that the gaps might be a bit on the large size but this was the only way that i could get the rudder on,

Doing the ships boats, these are the three that I made up from Chinese kits, here is the link to my build log on them,

1516.jpg
One of the launches and a Pinnace , I bought two launches by mistake so I will have two launches and one pinnace on the skids, now I know its a bit of a dilemma, the Royal William models show top masts laid between the Gallows and the fore deck, but I wanted to go with this option and use skids to show the three ships boats,

1517.jpg
after building the skids I supported them with turned pillars and applied the cradles for the boats to sit in, this is the pinnace just sitting on the cradles,

and a couple of close ups,

I've got decide whether to paint them or just leave them varnished, anyone got any idea's what colour they would have been painted,

Thank you for looking in,

best regards John.

Hey Jon,

Great dinghies you've built there. Your ship is beautiful. But what would such a beautiful ship be without rigging? Now comes the hard work. I'm really afraid of that because I've never done anything like it before. Yours looks really great! Get some rest, mate, and then get started. I'll stay loyal to you. :D Thumbsup

Superb boats! They display well on the skids and I'm not convinced they need any paint at all!!

Thanks for sharing so many great pictures of your work!
From a historical standpoint, not appearance standpoint, were the boats painted, and what colors and styles of painting were done? Were there any trends in how they were painted or were boats all unique? I'd like to ask this question not only for 19th century boats, but boats going as far back as 1600. The answer can help those looking to recreate the boat as it actually appeared, not as models were typically made.

getting ready to paint the crew, for attaching them to the deck I've decided to use some stainless steel pins, I drilled up into the body and then CA glued the pin in place, I've left the T part on the pin as it will come in handy for holding the figures while I paint them,

1524.jpg
and the rest of the crew, the two in the top left will be climbing the rigging so no pins needed for them. So after painting I will drill holes in the deck to accept the end of the pins.
So I'm now looking for some Invisible paint to paint the pins with so you wont see them,

best regards John.

I've had the cast taken off my left arm, but I've still got to wear a splint on both arms for another two weeks, so I've just been doing small jobs on the ship.

1525.jpg
I've managed to do a bit to the Lanthorns , this is after they were cleaned up,

1526.jpg
And showing where they will sit on the model,

1527.jpg
I drilled a hole a hole up through the bottom of the lanthorn and right up trough and out of the top, see next pic,

1528.jpg
Showing the hole through the top,

1529.jpg
Them I bent some 2.5mm brass rod to the correct shape and CA glued the rod to the top and bottom of the Lanthorn,

1530.jpg
Showing where they will be attached, sorry for the fuzzy pic,

1531.jpg
and a close up view, they are not yet glued in place,

best regards John.
