Revenge 1577 1/64 Victory Models/Amati

Been itching to start a POF model but decided to finish a couple projects that I have already started, continuing with the pear planking on my Revenge. I thought the 5mm planking provided in the kit was out of scale (too wide) so I’ve been using 4mm wide planks - takes a lot more planks but looks better to me. Hi Lou - long time no hear. The pear wood looks exquisite, and you did an excellent job of planking the hull. She is really shaping up to be a piece of eye candy. Thumbsup

Thanks Heinrich, it has been a while, I need to re-visit my Bluenose as well, so many interests and some health issues interfering as well, I appreciate you remembering me! Kurt, I bought some really nice Pearwood from Keim Lumber in Ohio and also some very excellent Pear billets from: https://modellbau-holz.jimdo.com/ which I processed with my band saw and Byrnes Table saw and made my own planks.

The Revenge from Occre is 1/85 scale. Smaller than the Amati kit. I am building the Occre kit. I did notice that the stern has a slightly different coat of arms than the Amati and not as much rigging. It’s also about $200 cheaper, but still looks like a quality model.

I have BOTH the OcCre and the Amati Revenge kits. Both kits are good. The OcCre is smaller, and the mahogany wood for the hull planking is pretty kit standard, but you can throw on cherry or walnut and upgrade the whole look of the model. I'm not a fan of the MDF frames in the Amato kit. They work, but are fragile. It might be best to get some cheap basswood plywood from Menards, trace and cut new frames, but only if you want the model to last 100 years. One the planking is done, the strength of frames won't be needed. Both kits use printed paper or paper like material for the painted portions of the hull. Painting the colorful patterns instead of using the kit prints would be a very challenging and laborious process, but at least you have a choice. Frankly, I'm not sure which to build first. That is, after I finish HMS Sovereign of the Seas. Required upgrades for both kits include replacement of all the blocks, as usual. There's no sense spending all that time rigging with crappy clocks. Using properly made quality rope is optional IMHO. Adding lots of small details (such as gun tackles, or yardarm parrels) on the OcCre model is a challenge due to the smaller size of the model. I've built at 1:100 scale before, and it's a notable effort cramming all the desired detailes and working with tightly spaced rigging.

Can you point me to a source for quality blocks.

Historical question: Are there any old depictions of HMS Revenge with painted sails? Many modern depictions have interpretations of the sails being painted with designs such as below. It is know that the Spanish often painted their sails, typically with a red cross, but what is the English practice in Tudor times?

My observtion from paintings I have seen is not many had sail decorations, either the artist didn't include them or they didn't exsist in great numbers, for example your second image clip from the painting is the only ship with decorative sails, also are a few others I found.

Thanks for the guidance. It is probably more correct to leave painted designs off the sails for the Revenge. THANK YOU for the advice!
