Revenge 1577

Denis

I have just come across your log of the Revenge. I am looking forward to seeing more

Cheers

Hi Geoff

Thank you for dropping in on my log, nice to be with friends again.

Denis.

Hi
This is the middle deck.
I cut down some picture glass into small oblongs so I could scrape the planking down.
After that I sanded it down with 320 then 600 grit paper.

The grating and the deck are looking great, what did you use for caulking for the decks?

Hi Zoltan

For the caulking I used a ZIG felt tipped pen that I got from the Art Shop.

Hi ship mates

This is the next deck that I planked.
This one you can plank off the ship, not like the lower deck that you had to glue in place then plank it.

Before and after varnishing.

Hi mates
Yes I know you must be getting bored by now but just trying to catch up on this log with what I have built so far.

Some more photos of the decks.

No worries, looking great,I am behind with my build log too,but catching up soon.

Lovely work on the decks Denis. The close-up shots are a real help to me right now as approach this stage on my build. :handgestures-thumbup:

Hi GemmaJF

Re decks, I think they could be a lot better, it was not through the want of trying .
The kit set Tanganyika strips for the decks was in one word "rubbish", not only was the sizes all over the place, it is also brittle.

If I had to do it again I think I would use boxwood or pear.

Denis.

Hi Denis,

I bought replacement tanganyika strips for the job. I have the same thing, width is very variable, up to a 1mm variation (0.5mm under or over) which really surprised me considering it came from a specialist ship building site and is the product of a well known company. At 0.5mm thickness I'm finding it is brittle also. I think I will try to build a block of cut planks and sand the edges. It also seems to want to curl when glued. Have to be honest the 0.5mm laser cut walnut in the ZHL kit is much better! But too dark and a little wide for what I wanted.

To me your work looks excellent. It is always the same with us modelers, we never see in own work what others can. We only see we could do better. It will always lead us to another build though. ;-) The images are very helpful, as I can see how you approached doing it. I would be more than happy if I could get my deck planking even close to your overall result.

Hi all.

Up date on the decks, I have put the support beams and posts in place and a coat of stain ready for the main deck.

Hello GemmaJF

I also found the Tanganyika curled up just like you.

I don't know what you paid for your strips but I said I got 100 x 5mm (or was it 4mm not sure with out looking for it) and 100 x 3mm from a shop in Australia.
I think it cost about $259nz, so it is not cheap.

Have you tried bleaching Walnut, I did this with my Royal William build (not finished yet).

Denis.

Hello Denis,I can recomend this shop for wood.

Hi all

I have placed the cabin walkway and planked it + one sanding sealer and 3 coats of satin varnish.

Dry fitted the cabin walls but they have to be moved about 4mm.

Hi

Next up was to make the whipstaff platform and steps.
I also added some doors.
Sorry about the dust, I did clean it all off.
I also added the bow deck.
