Builded the Stern part and both sides closed. Now trying to get the layout for the cannon ports right. Difficult. Piece of card board with the holes doesnt fit and 1 on 1 drawing also doesnt fit. Trying with tape to figure it out. Anyone other ideas ?

I usually figure out ports prior to planking because rarely are the drawings ever accurate in that respect. once I know where they are going I draw up a cheat sheet measuring from the stern forward and from the keel up I get the center of each port this way. I open the ports close to the actual size during planking it makes things easier for me. when the planking is done I refine the ports with needle files to square them up. The dowels you had sticking out of the planking weren't they for port location? and were they on center for the ports? I usually find I have to cut into bulkheads to get all ports in for some reason almost no manufacturer thinks far enough ahead about port locations in relationship to bulkheads.

Hi Patrick,

Normally I first measure and layout the wales, this as these determine the finall look of the ship and are the most important planks on the sides. If you have sketched out the wales then from the wales you can determine the position of the gun ports because you then have the correct reference height to measure from. Then you can position the gunport correctly between the bulkheads.

Tnx all. The holes from the dowels are still there but then the top line of the cannon ports are not right. Gonna look for the place of the wales .

Made the hull till the top. The final form of the top has to be sanded down a bit but i have to wait until the second planking is done because the wood breaks with sanding because it is not glued to the hull formes. The have to be cut of and then a also can plank the inside and do the deck planking. Painted all the cannons with airbrush and now making the total cannons. Takes a lot of parts to make one. Started also with making the cannon ports. Ordered metal cannon ports and they are 13mm by 13. Its easy to cut. First make holes with dremel and then my proxxon belt sander makes the port with only pushing it in the holes. Takes 20 seconds with the sander. 1 time with the sander straight in the port and then turn it a quarter and sand the other side of the port.cannon is not glued yet so its not in the middle of the port yet.

Tnx guys. Havent been out now for 2 weeks in can walk to the elevator and then havy panic attack starts. So can built a lot but i would rather Go outside. Wife has also panic attack when going out alone. My docter and the 8 specialists in have are looking now witch medicins these attacks triggers but its hard with 30 pills a day.

Nice looking cannons, your rolling along nicely on this build. Building cannons is my second least favorite thing to do lol I guess that's why I haven't started the Victory yet, I dread doing all those. Hopefully the Doctors get your Meds straightened out for you quickly Brother.

Tnx m8. They are working hard on it.went down today and walked a bit around apartment complex. Cannons can i make in livingroom so can talk with my wife and work on the ship. Had to relocate the gunports i made. Needed to be 2 cm higher. So had to close the ports and make New ones. Took me couple of hours to get them right.

Its acryl and done with my airbrush. Havent made a painting with it for 2 years because my shoulder and neck hurt a lot with airbrush but i think That i will start soon again. Maybe half hour a day.

G'day Pat
She's looking great my friend. How are you feeling now, hope all things are improving health wise.
Your model is going on like a FireFireFirebushfires, so fast and your workmanship is outstanding. Thumbs-Up
As Maarten said, you should intall the Wales very soon, as they are very important with the rest of the port holes etc..
I even sometimes put the Wales on before the first blanking if I've got some extra timber, that is. That is how the original ships were made and its easier to measure the distance from the decking etc..

Made Wales from airbrush masking tape. Now all the ports are good in line with the balsa blocks behind the planking. Had to move some ports 2 or 3 mm because with the original 1 on 1 drawing in hit the bulwarks. The wood breaks easy and it doesnt matter if i Do it with my proxxon sander or by hand with my grandfathers tools. So i wait with making the ports square until the second planking is done or can i put some varnish on the wood to harden it. When all the ports are finished on this side i take tracing paper to get the other side the same or use tape to trace the ports and use that on the other side.

Thought in do the other ones also. All ports finished but not correct sanded yet.. now taking trace paper and copy it to the other side.
