ya weii my first time planking also. I have viewed many build logs , so understand the principles....just have to go at it. It will be a few days before I start, I have to add several planks to the rear of the ship , and well there is the sanding of the bulwarks to complete. It is a large ship.

I am working on Occre’s HMS TERROR of the Franklin Expedition.
I noticed a naval figure on your mode, which I believe you said was 1/90 scale.
May I ask where you obtained the figure?
I have completed the Corel HMS VICTORY with a lot of changes to fit the original plans. It is 1/98 scale and I wanted a figure to represent Admiral Nelson on deck.
I also would not mind a figure or two in 1/70 scale to represent Franklin
Again nice work.

ok guys and girls , so I cut out the bulkheads so as to fit the gun barel supports.

So now the starboard side is complete and sanded down ,used some Elmer's wood filler to fill in some of the dimples. with a keen eye I checked out her hips to see how smooth she was , then painted the gun ports with sanding sealer, minwax.

Those little cast gunport frames/lids are quite well done!

SO today painted the gun ports spar black before the planking.

I have a couple of different types of wood filler and not happy with the results. They seem a bit on the "sandy" side in the consistencies. I may try what you are using here Smelly.

Hello, well today I completed a small planking job at the stern. The wood is sapelli. I added two coats of sanding sealer,with a light sanding between the two, 400 grit. I predrilled the hole for the nails, better to get things straight.

Hello So it's been a good weekend. I have 5 stakes applied to the bulwarks, and did some sanding to see how I was doing. I believe that it will be fine. A few pics to show the progress....I still have many Canon ports to cut out. I used some double sided tape to show the front keel.

Does the entire bow get filled and planked separate from sides?

Hello...ok still planking and have now reached the bluff bow. A little tricky spot at the bow had to add a short piece of planck to help keep the stakes straight around the curve of the bow. Did not want the piece to come to a point, so with a bit of sanding got it spot on.

You've got a great shop, Smelly! I have an old kitchen table, a book case, and an air hockey table in my loft/library. I have to sneak my tools up from the garage.

so now i have one last section of bulwarks to do. Should be done tomorrow. Then will start the sanding to receive bulwark planking. I have some filler to add here and there to get a nice smooth base. I will also at this time, apply some wood sealer, to the gun ports then paint them black. Will use minwax sanding sealer.the paint have yet to check wath i have in stock.

Is the sanding sealer transparent?

Hi smelly, looks like you really have good build going on. I'll be looking forward to see all the planking over the bulwarks. At this point I'm a little intimidated at the prospect of planking on my ship. Never tried it before.

I hated cutting out the gun ports on my Connie. They never turned out to be the size I wanted them.

yes.... i just have to get them close to size there are metal hatches in the kit.

Right then, been busy with the port side bulwark. Have completed the planking, just a couple of planks to add at the stern that Finish with a 90 degree turn, gonna be tricky to get right.
