Staghound...Extreme clipper 1850 by rwiederrich 1/96

Rob, while I'm not doing any scratch building myself, I appreciate your detailed step-by-step procedural explanations with accompanying pictures. Meanwhile I discovered the ship's bell from the lost Fernald & Pettigrew, Kittery, Maine built 1855 clipper Noonday. I thought you might appreciate seeing how closely your replica resembles the real thing. Since this article came from the Portland Press Herald, I came upon another unrelated story. That was about Snow Squall South Portland's clipper. There I found another beautiful Buttersworth piece. The main subject is the clipper  Warnrer but it's suspected that Snow Squall is the background vessel.

@rwiederrich Rob,
I noticed that "Old Glory" in this subdued image was in color. Using my cell phone app I was able to enhance the existing colors and here's the result.

I began fabricating the many embossed copper strips. Here are a few of the process.

I developed and devised this method by way of necessity. I wanted full expression plates, but the time required to lay them...let alone make them was staggering for me. Laying 2000 premade plates would have taken weeks if not months and the cost was out of reach. So I came up with this system....using an old rubber laundry roller, wire fencing and drywall sanding screen. Now it's nothing to emboss pre measured lengths of copper tape. I've coppered 3 models using this technique.

Got about half done on the starboard side. Next I’ll finish off up to the waterline.

I’ll make the rest of the embossed strips tomorrow. Then finish the coppering.

If I’m right, it will probably take me a total of about 8 hours to make and apply the copper on this model of Staghound. That’s a record for even me.

I'll need roughly 31 more embossed strips to complete the job.....then I'll simply add all the single plates to cover the keel foot....then paint.

As with my other McKay clippers, I want to mount Staghound in a unique way. One idea is mounting her on an antler rack...then mounted that to some kind of base. Using the antler rack as the pedestals. Still thinking it through. But something unique must be devised.
