The cap rail is actually the gunwale and does not normally hang over the outboard edge of the hull. Examples below for the next time.

Your support is always well appreciated Grant. I think with the pear wood I especially like the slight inconsistencies in colour. As you know it makes for subtle variations in deck planking, which on any model is a prominent visual feature. I’ve not worked with boxwood but might try it in the near future.
The cannon are ready and still waiting to be placed aft. I got ahead of myself and need to place other fixtures first, which of course require finishing too.
As for a “Grant ricochet rabbit” I’ve so many pre-fabricated parts I’ve made and put aside It’s like rabbit droppings in, on and around my workshop. In fact I forget where some of the parts I made are now

Hi Erik, thanks for following my build log and your nice comments. I’m having a lot of fun with this kit. It’s well designed with an exceptional manual. In addition I find the input, helpful advice and encouragement from forum members makes model ship building a pleasure.
Thanks this helps a lot. Your Pear deck came out really nice. My plan was to stain the AYC deck planks but I may have to rethink this with some pear as well.I found the look of pear really appealing, especially for the deck and other small fixtures and fittings. The lack of prominent grain and variations in the wood colour made it an obvious choice for me. It's also a popular wood amongst model builders for, as I mentioned previously, the ability to keep clean edges/cuts. Since the Syren has areas, such as the bulwarks, that need painting I did not want to waste pear wood in those locations. So I used AYC and found it easy to work and, similar to the pear, maintained a clean edge. It also allowed for smooth finishing and subsequently even and level painting. For tiny parts, like the binnacle, I found unpainted pear perfect for those mini projects.
Changing out most of the kit basswood was a personal decision. More so because I was looking for an even scaled finish to the best of my ability and I found after working on the hull that the basswood just didn’t do it for me. Of course the cost of pear is a factor but it becomes acceptable considering the spread of time and enjoyment we get from our builds.
I’m happy with the result so far and without doubt changing out the wood works for me. I hope this helps.
