The ALFRED 74. [COMPLETED BUILD]

Hi Brian,
What's your opinion on Huon pine for model ship building?
I have some that I have used before- mostly internally to pack between bulk heads or to be totally painted over.
My pieces seem to have grain that is too pronounced to be displayed.
Just noticing the grain on your planks are a lot finer than the timber I have.
G’day John.
Greetings from Coffs Harbour. I have been building plank on frame ships for nearly 40 years and using Huon Pine for nearly all that time. The problem grain you have is on two surfaces of a piece of plank. If you look at the adjacent surface grain you will see it is a much finer grain more comparable with the scale you are using. You will also appreciate the (bending) qualities. Just soak the end you need to bend in some hot water - it will almost tie in a knot.

Attached are some pics of the Batavia (1629 wrecked off WA). The hulls are all Huon Pine. If I have friends passing through Tasmania I get them to pick me up a short piece from a timber yard there. Aus$25?

If you want to talk to me my number is 0458534148.
