USS Constitution "Old Ironsides " 1:93 Scale Mamoli

Eric

At this stage I am only running Universal Gcode Sender and GRBL.

I want to get into CAD and generate Gcode from there.

I was going to make a jig to hold the copper with pins heads in it to mark the copper or maybe use Neptune (John" idea of the sewing marker wheel.

The laptop is huge it has 528mg of ram. :D

It originally had XP on it which I upgraded to Vista and which will not run a supported browser and therefore I cannot run my antivirus software. It should run windows 7 better than Vista.

I only want really need to run the Gcode on the Laptop. The rest I will run on the PC

I did look for the software you suggested but could not find a download for it.

Cheers

I have completed a bit more sanding and manage to tear of a piece on the stern. There is a post that needs to go back in the corner so I will probably get away with just a repair.

As I have not yet finished sanding I have not cleaned up my work bench.D.P1010046D.jpg

Whilst looking at Joseph's build log today I saw the balsa cutter. I was wondering how I could cut the copper into strips for the copper tiles.

Yes I know it took a while to fall into place and decide to have a look at the balsa stripper. It will cut/Scribe straight but the balsa stripper will also hold a heavy duty #24 blade for harder woods, well in this case copper

Tips:

You can make it more efficient by installing the blade at a ~25° angle rather than perpendicular to the cutting surface (as product is pictured). Also change to a #24 blade for better results.

As we all know you can never have to many hobby tools.

With a jig to hold the copper straight and a stamp block jig in a vice.

The problem might be solvedBalsa stripper.jpg

I saw it on another post and did a bit of research on it.

With the heavier blades I tgink it will be handy for the copper tiles and maybe able to cut all the way through

Do a search of eBay for balsa stripper

This link will tell you a bit more about it

I managed to do a little bit of repair work on the stern. The repair work feels strong enough

That was one little job I could have done without.

I still have clean up the stern post from excess timber and put in a few stealers

Hi Geoff

Nice work my friend.

Do the top of the frames get cut off above the deck ???.

Denis.

Geoffr,
I saw your copper plate a few posts ago. I just wonder did you consider using that self-adhesive copper strip instead of the plate? I do not plan coppering any of my hulls but if I would I definitely would want to try avoiding that mess with the glue.
Janos

The cost of the copper plating up against the cost of the self adhesive strips is huge. As long as you clean as you go with a cotton bud and acetone mounting say 6 at a time, which I did in my Norfolk Sloop build.

I am a bit closer to putting the second planking on my USS Constitution.

Just a couple stealers and a smear of filler and finish of the sanding. I realized today looking through Donnies build log that the planking under the forecastle deck had not been planked, so I went back to my plans and sure enough that portion does not happen until after the copper tiles have been added.

As my Connie is going to be painted and a fair proportion of it covered by copper tiles and with gun ports as well, I don't think it is worth while cutting the planks to length, just use full lengths. Am I right in making that decision?

Thanks Zoly

I might get the waterline marker out and mark where the copper tiles will eventually go up to. Then start the second layer planking.

I agree with Zoly. If you are planning on painting use what ever it takes to get good coverage.

Mike

I agree with Zoly to. I will try and do the planking as if the Connie was not going to be painted as good practice, bu will use some off-cuts below the copper plate line.

I have order my balsa cutter and heavy duty blades so I will keep you informed of the progress on that to. It show just how one person idea can have a flow on idea.

Cheers
Geoff

So close. I given the Connie a smear of filler and giving it is last sand down I hope before starting on the second planking
