VOC SPIEGELRETOURSCHIP BATAVIA 1628 - KOLDERSTOK 1:72

Great recovery on the bow sprint ring.

I like the rope walk, small footprint and looks to be continuous length type.

Now to wait for the cost and tech specs.
Thank you for the kind words Kurt! As soon as I have more information, I will let you guys know.

Hello Dear Friends

So let's finish the Falkonet longboat!

But first comes that second and real heart-stopping moment where all the bulkheads need to be broken free from the hull. And "breaking" them out is exactly what is required. Armed with a pair of long-nosed pliers this was accomplished in no time and WITHOUT any damage to the hull or ribs.

All bulkheads have been removed and now was the time to clean out all excess glue.

Thereafter, the instructions are crystal clear and easy to follow.

Here, most of the excess glue has been removed, the Top and Bottom Stern Gratings added, the Deck Boards and Centre Keel Covering installed and the Bow Grating put in place.

Thereafter the hull received a quick sanding and the first coat of undiluted Tung Oil diluted with Mineral Turpentine. (30% Tung Oil; 70% Mineral Turpentine).

Very very happy!

Rudder added and interior coated with the Tung Oil and Mineral Turpentine mixture.

The last picture is of the longboat on the Haarlem. The stern is just loosely placed on a cannon carriage for support.

And that concludes this longboat build. It is an amazingly well-engineered kit which I believe set high standards. Whether or not it fits on the Haarlem, I leave to you decide. Please let me know your thoughts.

That is all for now; take care, stay safe and happy shipbuilding!

Kind regards - Heinrich
Lovely little long boat Heinrich.

Cheers,
Stephen.

@Stevedownunder Thank you Stephen! Falkonet makes lovely models - very fragile to build, but really nice. Unfortunately, the longboat didn't suit the historical era of the Batavia/Haarlem.

And then the bowsprit was finished!

Looking good Heinrich! Well done! It’s always amazing to see the transformation the ship goes through when adding masts and rigging. I look forward to seeing the mast going up.

Nice work. The early phots showing the bottom of the bowsprit rounder with the engraved arrow had me smiling and wondering if that was a reminder to the crewmen sent forward the direction of the vessel???? You have installed a lot of well placed work and I know that the same will be passing under the bow to the wake of completion. Rich (PT-2)

@Dean62 Thanks Dean. Before the masts can go in, there are still some assortments that need to be placed on the deck. So, next on the agenda is the rigging of the 6 extra cannons that the Haarlem carried and fixing the lifeboat (chaloup) permanently on deck.

Congratulations, Heinrich,
the real ship was already very beautiful in itself, and you are fully capturing its aesthetics. Especially I like the clinker planking at the top and the clean lines of the hull.
The bowsprit also looks very promising for the rest of the rigging...

Thank you Rodolfo! It took me a long time to plank, but it was worth every drop of sweat! :) This ship is the reason why I like walnut so much on these Dutch period-ships.

Heinrich, superb craftsmanship on the “NEW” Bowsprit. Great perseverance on your part.

Jan

Thank you Jan! One of the top Dutch builders has a saying "oefening baar kunst" which translated means something like "practice makes perfect". I don't know about the "perfect" part, but the practice certainly paid dividends.

So still not entirely happy with the crosstrees, I went back into the shipyard tonight and finished the crosstrees according to my preference.

微信图片_20210830232140.jpg

In the picture above and below, note the two rounded dowels on top of the side railings of the crosstree. This will prevent the rope from chafing across the square edge of the crosstrees.

微信图片_20210830232132.jpg

Now I'm happy. On to the cannons tomorrow.

Well-spotted @Steef66 Stephan. It is actually the joining piece between two bamboo chopsticks. The wood is very tightly grained and can be finished very smoothly. Another advantage is when drilling into it, it doesn't splinter!

Will anybody be able to view the underside of your bow sprint round nest? lots of markings left to be painted or removed if so.

If nobody will ever see it then who cares whats under there.

Workmanship is great as usual, just keep making those notes to self! They seem to help.

@Kkonrath Thank you for the kind words, Kurt. My notes to self are easily removed so no problem there. I will most certainly continue making notes to self - it will help to avert upside-down and back-to-front-mounted components! :)

We have yellow post-it or sticky notes all around our harbor for those reminders of "to do" :) Rich
