What tool

Those punches have square tips. They are intended to be used to punch out pins holding parts together. They will not work as center punches. I suppose you could try to grind a point on one.

Duco Cement, the old fashioned model airplane glue that comes in a tube, is great for temporarily gluing sheet brass to wood. I also keep inexpensive craft plywood on hand for this purpose. I run this brass/plywood laminate through my Byrnes saw to cut distortion free strips.

Phil’s drilling trick sounds like a good idea.

I prefer to sandwich the brass between a couple of pieces of wood then drill the hole instead of using a punch to avoid stress and bending....
That sounds like a good idea.
I'm going to use it when I start on the deadeyes shortly.
