ZHL San Felipe 1690 - Ted R

A day (or more) late, but mainly a point of interest.... For the doors in the bulkhead at the break of the forecastle and at the quarterdeck would there have been small panels that could open for small arms fire against enemy sailors that boarded the ship as was done on English ships? From Goodwin, The Construction and Fitting of the English Man of War, page 118.
Allan
Thank you.

I wish I had the time to build my kit alongside you! But at the moment, all I can do is plan ahead. Can I offer a thought on the issue with part 47? In Scott Shilling's build log, in post#41, he notes that we need part 47 when the instructions say we need part 48. Could it be that 47 and 48 should be swapped?

Good looking out, but I believe part 47 goes below part 4617628792902034764855170730102231.jpg

Just an aside, I had approaching 350 people who had viewed this thread and now it's 224. Not that it makes a difference

Following the taper of the hulk at the aft end it appears that part 47 is too wide. See markups in the photo. The outer mark shows the actual profile at the end to correspond to frame 12. The inner mark shows continuing taper of the hull. I'm going to install the part as provided as it would probably be easier to grind/file the part down than to add to it in place 17628816861477181831025665791945.jpg

It's all back together I hope it's correct. I've agonized over this for more than a week. The owners of this manufacturing company should spend a little money on their plans, Instructions and details.IMG20251111102919.jpg

The upper part of the frames need to be removed after the hulk planking is installed. They have to be removed prior to deck planking. I have cut through the upper frame parts at deck level to approximately 3/4 of its depth to make it easier to remove them later IMG20251112161203.jpgIMG20251112161214.jpg

There's a lot wrong with the Chinese feed, I did it my way. The upper overhang of the gallery should not be pulled up like that. Their beams are wrong in height, starting from 10 to 12. And yes, the height between the galleries should be 35 mm. If you do it as in the set, you will get 25 mm and the resin supports of the balcony will not fit in height.I also suffered with this place, in the end I had to tear everything off and redo it in my own way. Now I'm continuing the cladding and I've already made sure that I did everything right.IMG_20250824_000219.jpgIMG_20250824_000034.jpgIMG_20250821_093145.jpgphoto_2025-09-14_09-29-28_обработано.jpgIMG_20251105_134720.jpg

Arrrgh, I dread taking this all out again but will follow your advice. Thank you for letting me know at this stage. Is the lowest platform wrong too. Iser the angle depending on the four braces below it.
I could certainly use a mentor and would appreciate you keeping an eye on I'm my build.
I ended up in the emergency room again last night and going to my primary care doctor this morning. I will buy another bottle of isopropyl alcohol on the way home.
Thank you again

Got part of the demolition done. Hopefully I'll get down to the lowest stern platform installed at the wrong angle. Can't do much at a time as my lungs are having an exacerbation again. The acetone irritates me too.IMG20251115164248.jpgIMG20251115164241.jpg
Sorry the photos don't make much sense but don't have the energy to reshoot them today.

Hi @Ted Robinson. I hope you will recover soon.

To be honest, I felt a heavy heart as I looked through your thread. I am new to this game of sailing ship modelling, and from what I have seen so far, everybody has struggles with their build. Anyway, I am waiting for my first sailing ship kit, the HMS Beagle by Occre, to arrive; and I hope I don't come across too many impasses.

I sure hope I can have the same patience and fortitude to resolve problems as you do. In this regard, you have been inspiring.

Actually, I believe, as you learn more about sail ship building, coupled with your innate virtues, you will end up as a scratchbuilder.

So, keep up the good work.

Welcome to SOS. I find. My ship modeling to be somewhat like my marriage. Some of the most rewarding and frustrating parts of my life. I'm fairly inexperienced at ship modeling and older. The kits I have selected to build are better suited to highly or at least advanced modeler's only having built a couple if dingies in the Model Expo series.
With the help of our fellow modelers I have managed to generate a really nice POF Bluenose kit. Neither of these kits offer instructions on the level of your Beagle kit. The Beagle by Ocre was in my shortlist when I bought the San Felipe.
We all probably aspire to build to the level of Peter, Donnie, so many others it just isn't going to happen in my case. And I'm a hack. The main point is the journey and enjoyment of the hours spent.
I provide a valuable service here. Read my build log and realize, that's what I shouldn't do, along with some comic relief.
Happy modeling

Yes, you certainly do provide important insights into the difficulties of building a ship with poor plans.
Thanks again for sharing.
