So I was hoping to start building one of my POF kits from CAF but I have a couple models that I have already started and I know I should really work on them before starting another one :( I also have the Yuanqing Bluenose in work so I guess I need to work on my discipline and finish something before starting a new build…. I hate discipline!!! :)
I started this kit in early 2020, it’s a very nice kit, good wood selection, lots of construction plans, awesome rigging plans, and a color booklet of pictorial instructions. I have had some issues with the bulkhead uprights (extensions) breaking, so care needs to be taken when rotating the model for planking.F99B5310-AC73-4D8E-89D0-C4EFAB5AD9C0.jpeg

I have a few pictures of the earlier build stuff so I post a few and get us up to where I am now.
The false keel and bulkheads are made from MDF, but it’s really dense and works well for the task, I almost always upgrade the wood provided in the kit and I decided for this one to use maple for the decks and am replacing a lot of the walnut deck furnishings etc. with pear. I will also use pear for most of the outer hull planking layer as well.
The gratings are CNC cut from brass, I think, they have round holes for the openings but at a bit of distance you can’t tell and I don’t mind them a bit… I did paint them though as the brass is just a dead giveaway that something isn’t right… :) I really like the figure of the maple on the decks, just gives it some pop…

Yes Brian, and I have to give credit to Dean62 for encouraging me to take a few steps back and come to grips with my obsession (lack of discipline) :) Hopefully I can stay with them and I’ll be on track in no time…. The really tricky part was convincing the wife that I needed three more POF kits even though I have a few unfinished models at hand….

Ready for planking, and closing it up…. Then I made new keel and stem pieces using the kit parts as templates, the wood they used for that ( and most walnut uses) is called Dibetou - not a fan, it’s lighter color, porous grain and easily broken… so I am using pear for most of it but for the keel and stem I used some Bocote I had in my stash.95DC85E8-C04F-4A64-BF9E-6F63926328C0.jpeg7F5F3290-5BCC-4589-BE41-3FDED10E808A.jpeg21B9DDC5-C7ED-4B8E-9C07-8E686C4BFE35.jpeg1B47F8BF-A19C-45A1-B746-7B8F1152A4D5.jpeg

And as it is today after doing some more planking…. With some close ups prior to final sanding …… part of the reason I stopped working on her was that when I decided to use pear for the second planking I calculated what 10” planks would be at 1/64 and it comes to 4mm… so I am using 4 mm but the kit has like 5.5mm planks so it is taking a lot longer to plank this thing…. It’s a good size at 1/64 and the bluff bow doesn’t help either.
But I think it will look good in the pear and maintaining the planking butt shift etc.

So that’s where I am at - from now on it will be live and as it happens…. Appreciate any input, comments, and tips on maintaining a steady build rate…. And of course- discipline! :) BFC7A9C4-841A-400A-B07A-A8D50295633F.jpeg7C977957-89C9-4E48-84C0-9E2F9D159981.jpeg5DD31B94-BA77-4BCD-B964-470E94E40D1A.jpegED5A1D8F-AACF-468B-B85A-069D66BA8AC0.jpeg4D947206-7AA6-4E67-B49D-50105C292A7C.jpeg

Very good work - I will follow your log with big interest

Thanks Uwe, appreciate it, and thanks to all for the likes. Well I finished up the lower hull planking to the point where they want me to add the stern post and rudder, and install the gun deck cannon carriages. So here’s a progress pic or two. It’s just rough sanded - still need to figure out the stem to planking transition point and how best to smooth that.4F02F40C-4A63-417B-8A32-EC10A9BBE898.jpegF0D1DB07-CCA7-461B-A573-664AFAB87BA4.jpeg80CA7CF0-7DC2-4504-9EE5-B6C46097BF07.jpeg6C344071-8406-4F32-9D25-64AB579002C6.jpeg

really like the pear look. are you leaving it natural or staining it?

Great planking and at that scale, the bow would have been tough - Excellent work.

I was going to ask about finish too. The pear will darken considerably so you could try on some spare timber and test strips to get what you like.

From the topsides, can you view all the internal decking? I haven’t seen too many model with that degree of internal detail unless it is visible.

Regards,

Your work is very clean , hope you don't orphan this one too soon . I know that feeling well, when the build stops being fun . A few months on the back shelve is
usually all it needs and of course then the new project, a new ship to start; that part is really fun.

Wow, thanks guy’s for the comments and the likes! I really appreciate all the interest.
Doc, that bow gave me some fits as well, first time I have tried edge bending the planks and I was amazed how much downward bend it took to be level on the hull!

WDO, I plan to just leave it natural and use some satin Wipe On Poly for the finish, looks great on the pear IMHO.

Peter, the internal details are not visible except for some hatch access covers that you can leave off, unless like me, you like to peek through the gunports :) - the steering whipstaff mechanism is accessible if you leave a cover off the helmsman’s control hatch….
And the plan is to stick with it Jeep, I will take a break in the spring/summer for my RC glider obsession of course but I plan to keep working it as I do want to start my POF builds also…

Looks great nice work, I think this is a more detailed version of the Occre kit I am currently building.
