Cala Esmeralda 1:58 by Occre [COMPLETED BUILD]

I took a break from Esmeralda to work on Le Rochefort framing. But got stalled waiting for some milling bits to arrive so I‘ve been working on the Esmeralda’s rigging. Without a doubt OcCre’s rigging diagrams are lacking. So I’ve been relying on pictures of the Santa Eulalia (the basis for this OcCre model) and Petersson’s book “Rigging Period Fore-and-Aft Craft” but it’s been slow going as I interpret the pictures and drawings. Anyway, I’ve made some executive decisions on how best to complete the standing rigging. For the purists and knowledgable riggers please forgive my errors. I’m learning as I go and have taken the opportunity to try different methods on this model. think of it as a sample board of various techniques and approaches.

I’ll be rigging the bowsprit next and then figuring out best way to rig the forestays and backstays. The OcCre plans completely ignore the backstays and have no information on how best to attach the forestays… Oh well, I’m learning lots of new terminology and methods… Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!
Hi Olivier, totally agree. I am building the Occre Endeavour and while the hull build instructions are good, I have found the rigging instructions to be very poor in comparison which has really slowed down my progress. Not convinced anyone at Occre has tried to use the instructions to build the model hence the challenges to figure out the rigging, particularly the running rigging.

Hi Keith, Ocree has a relatively good YouTube channel where you can see various step by step instructions. The whole rigging for the construction of my Essex I have taken from the video, because the instructions in the booklet is a bit confusing, especially for beginners.

Thanks Tobias, I will have a look to see if any help. However still nice to see paper instructions improved As I have spent a lot of time scratching my head

Good morning Oliver very nice model attached the plan with rigging maybe he will help you
Thanks Tobias. Yes, I have the OcCre plans. Both those that came with the kit and the ones I downloaded from OcCre. I also have the Santa Eulalia 1918 rigging plan. Unfortunately the text is in Catalan and translation apps don’t do a good job with that dialect. I do have a Catalan to Castilian dictionary but it too is hit or miss…

The PDF is multilingual ES, EN, FR, IT and DE.

I’m calling the standing rigging complete! I did make some creative decisions because of OcCre‘s poor rigging instructions.

Anyway, I’m sure it looks ok from a distance just don’t look to closely…

Now on to the ratlines and running rigging! I do know how to tie clove hitches, so that part will be straight forward. When I get bored with ratlines I’ll move back to the Le Rochefort framing.

You are doing a great job with the pailebot.
I hope the link will help you, there is a page with the translation from Catalá to Castellano ¨spaniard¨

Thanks Lorenzo. I do have this .pdf but my copy is of a copy of a copy (etc…) and as such not legible. Maybe this one I can read… thanks again.

Question: Are you going to install the footrope part 240 (I think). What's in the kit looks like window screen to me. Just think ahead (for me). But it's next in the instructions after the standing rigging.

I’ve been playing with that mesh and it really doesn’t lend itself to working around the lines and chains. At the moment I’m thinking that I will not install it. If I change my mind and figure out a solution I’ll let you know.

Today was rope making and dying day. I finally calculated the appropriate sizes for shrouds and stays so I needed to make them as the kit rope is not worth talking about… got the main stay, shroud and back stay ropes made. I also served the shroud lines so I think I’m ready to start the standing rigging.

Your ropes look fantastic. Is there a place that shows how the rope walk is built? You mentioned the "calculations" for the rope size and I would like to know how that works or where to find the info. Deciding on the rope sizes has been a real sticking point for me on this Cutty Sark 1:78 model. It's a large sailing ship for me at least and the included sizes of rope are not what they should be imo. Your ship is looking really nice thus far.

Good Afternoon.
i didn’t use the supplied stand offs so my “gearbox” is lower to the deck and you can’t see under it. Even on the real schooner you really can’t see anything From a distance. If you get right on top of the wheel house you do see the pulleys and ropes. What you choose to do is really up to you.

Now here you have the wheelhouse and the steering wheel. If the guy stands at the wheel he has to be facing to the stern, right? How the heck can he see where he's going? I never understood this arrangement.

I did not document how I made my ropewalk (I never think that far ahead). The one in the video is actually rev-2.0. I have since made rev-3.0 with its own motor so I don’t have to use a drill. I’ll try and cobble together some sketches and parts list.
For the rope sizes I use several excel spreadsheets that I have found online at various sources. Since they were available I believe they are not proprietary so I have uploaded them here. Use at your own risk.

Having sailed on sailboats with this wheel configuration, I know the helmsman (I guess the appropriate term would be helmsperson…) faces the bow and stands next to the wheel usually on the opposite side that the boom is on So they can see past the sail.
