That's a very nice rudder, Grant. And there is a 18th Century ship with this type of rudder: see the SoS-site and search for "Grant+Xebec".Good morning. We have had some beautiful winters days and have capitalised on this while we can- not much Xebec time.
The rudder : This little bugger fought with me hard….I had to reshape her due to my hull shape changes, redesign the Occre kit fitting etc etc.
Grants design. Not accurate however I was not going to fill the notches on the stem. Just looked ugly. So the kit was modified.

1. The rudder had to be cut and reshaped to fit the false keel
2. The rudder was bevelled on each side
3. The notches in the rudder were filled with cut out walnut. The kit pins were too large so I used 6mm copper pins. These are supposed to fit perfectly into the notches on the stem.- Did what I could.
4. Extended the top of the rudder as my hull changes made this all longer
5. Used the kit hinges. I would have preferred them narrower, however I had to go with what I have. Acid, Roughed up and painted with primer paint. Man I need to get some brass black. Will be an expensive mission but I’m over my brass painting efforts.
….and of course where the tape was left a change of wood colour. I’m sure I can sand this off and hopefully will not be seen when I put poly on.

Rounded the edges of a 4x4 walnut, wet, heated and shaped with curve. I added a little handle to assist my crew for fun.

The whole mechanism actually works….
Cheers Grant
About this, You mean the import costs? I suppose there is a gun-shop in Cape Town. I am sure they have it.Man I need to get some brass black. Will be an expensive mission
Looks good Grant!![]()
Hi Grant.
I'm slowly catching up with all the build logs and yours is very impressive. I like the way you have worked around the kits shortcomings. Keep up the great work.
Tony.
Good morning Dean, Paul and Tony. Thanks guys. Your encouragement and compliments are appreciated. Cheers GrantA wonderful result Grant! Bravo!

Yes. I can order on Amazon however need to use DHL or similar and this costs plenty. Then it sits at our customs and they add another 50% onto the charge. If I use normal post it never gets here or 6 months later. I have looked at gun stores and they are all out of stock and “don’t know when next delivery arriving”. I will get some though, a big bottle which hopefully will last- I don’t know the self life of this. Cheers GrantAbout this, You mean the import costs? I suppose there is a gun-shop in Cape Town. Grant try checking out Jewelery making stores and your every day model hobby shop. They may have a product called "JAX" it can patina in a variety of colours from Black, Brown Green etc for either Brass, Silver or Copper.. It's a very good product range. - BTW nice work on your Xebec. Thumbs up.Good morning Peter.. I’m not sure Grants design would handle a small squall in the Mediterranean.

Good morning Mark. I’ve tried almost everything to paint brass and it doesn’t really work. I will get brass black or some product which can patina….or just pay R3000 for a bottle. Lol costs more than my kitGrant, I feel your pain on both counts. Painting brass metal black isn't a whole lot of fun as I am now discovering, and placing any kind of faith in the SA postal system is even less fun. I hope you get what you're after though, and then you can show me how this brass blackening process actually works. Good luck!![]()

In fact, there were many Armenian merchants in Europe since the Middle Ages, especially in Italy and France.the Armenian emblem….what a landlocked country has to do with a Corsair Xebec who knows
Grant, now you have me thinking about buying a 3D printer.I know I cannot whittle wood as those magicians Peter (@Ptèr ), Dean (@Dean62 ) , Maarten (@Maarten ) and many others do. The kit decorations do not fit my Xebec in any manner so I cheated and bought a resin 3D printer. Lol it was cheaper than the three 3D Parts I bought for my Victory….go figure.
