NORSKE LOVE - Billing Boats 1:75 scale

Finally the upper gallery port side is completed. Next is planking the balcony.

And the top view, you can see the curve the upper piece will follow…

And I finished the next carving of a wolf…I added hair, but a lot got filled in when I dry brushed it. In fact it needs a little more gold added. But overall I am happy with it.

This is the actual orientation below…the hind legs will be sitting on the top of the railing…

Time to start planking the balcony…;)

Hi Dean, I very much admire your carving abilities.

Hi Dean, I very much admire your carving abilities.
Thank you Herman, there are some pieces I wish I would have used better wood! I have learned that pear wood and boxwood both cut clean and have sharp detail. I should have used one of those for the two pieces on the stern. They came out ok, but could have been better. I used a lesser wood because they have to be painted, and then realized it doesn’t matter, you still have to choose a wood based on how well it can be carved even if it will be painted. ;)

Wishing you all the blessings of this sacred day as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May your hearts be filled with peace, your homes with joy, and your lives with the hope Easter brings.
nice to hear fro you. will come back in a few dys, as my wife will have to make some Scanning in here backhead

Bravo Dean. Cool carving as well. Cheers Grant

I added the wolf, that will help determine the height of the railings.

On all the carvings I paint them black first, then dry brush aged copper and finally antique gold is dry brushed on last. I do that to give them more depth. But I it comes at a cost, a lot of the wood grain is filled in and I also lose some of the detail. I guess it’s a trade off. I didn’t want them just a solid gold color.

Update…
I continue to work on the galleries…I did final shaping of the upper piece and then soaked it and bent it and glued it on the ship.
Then I finished the other carvings on the starboard side. And I started painting. I am not finished painting, but making progress. ;)
I also added the board on the upper deck that goes against the upper gallery.
The corners still look ugly where I have them sanded flat, that is because a figure goes on each side on the flats. I will probably make those soon. I need to finish the port side first.
Then of course there is columns and railings. The railings will be interesting because they are arched from the end view and curved from the top view. The columns are at an angle to match the upper gallery, approximately 110 degrees included angle, or 20 degrees towards the stern.
Anyway, here are some pics of my current progress…

With the galleries being added it’s starting to look closer to being finished. Once the cannon doors go on, they will be red with a gold lion head, and that will really have an impact on the overall look. Also there is a side railing on the gangways that I am saving until I install the cannons and carriages, along with some of the deck furnishings. Otherwise they would most likely get in the way and be broken.
That’s it for now…I continue to work on painting and adding the carvings on the port side.

Well…after looking at the ship, I felt like the upper carvings didn’t come together and look like one flowing piece, similar to the lower carvings. In an attempt to make it look more cohesive, I added a flower and then painted the inside area the darker color like on the lower section. Thus keeping all of the black to the outside of the carvings. I’m not sure I achieved my goal and I’m not sure I like the addition of the flower. In fact I’m not even sure I want the floral piece to the side of the fox tail…sigh!
So opinions are welcome, I’m interested to hear others thoughts on this. Thanks!
