Thanks, Sergey! I am fascinated by how much the end shaping changes the look and feel of the knees. The second deck knees appear so much lighter and decorative - but dimensionally they are nearly the same.
Teach him the love to modelbuilding and he will never have money for drugs!

Excellent, Maarten. I confess that this never crossed my mind. My only thought was to get ALL of the knees out of the billet made to the proper thickness. I will try to use more care in the future. My thanks for keeping me on point!Perfection Paul,

I managed to wrap up the second deck today. That's about one month of work which is very similar to the amount of time it took me to fabricate the first deck. It would seem I don't get faster with repetition

Repetition, however, does apparently come with a lack of attention: I installed the centerline carlings and coamings without cutting in the dovetails for the ledges. Cutting these in situ is not for the faint of heart... it takes a steady hand and careful control of a very sharp chisel. In this case I got away with it, but I'll need to pay more attention going forward.
Anyway, here is where she sits as of this evening:

I already asked this question of someone via DM - but as I wait for his reply, I'll ask the same question here in the hopes that someone who knows how to read these drawings can help me sort something out:
Here are drawings of the 3rd deck on the SP. There are vertical knees (per normal) along the length of the ship. But as we approach the stern these knees become horizontal (I assume to keep them out of living spaces, or???).
Anyway, on the side drawings it appears as if these horizontal knees are UNDER the ledges - but on the above-view drawings it appears that these horizontal knees sit OVER the ledges.
What's going on here? None of my other monographs (or the 74-gun series) have this third deck so I have run out of resources.
Yellow are full-sized beams. Orange are ledges. Blue are knees.
IF the knees are UNDER the ledges the top two drawings make them look to be below the top of the beams rather than flush with the top of the beams. This is unexpected. Or maybe I'm not seeing things correctly...

Paul, I see the ledges butting up against the knees (neither above nor below) which doesn't make sense, but it is the way its drawn. On the plan view you still see a dashed line at the junction of the two because the two are still under something above it.
Hmm. Butting up against the knees sounds like shoddy workmanship so I agree that doesn't make much sense.
I'm on board for the dashed line convention - but how is it drawn if something is under something that is under something else???
The only explanation I can think of is that the horizontal knees are not designed to take vertical loads which they would be if the ledges were to attach to them. So, the only function I can think of for the ledges is as stiffeners for the decking. The main decking supports numbered 1-6 carry the main decking load and the ledges just stiffen it up. This is just a guess.
