Vasa - 1:65 DeAgostini [COMPLETED BUILD]

Happy New Year Everyone!

While I patiently wait for linseed oil to 'set' and less patiently wait for a shipment from Russia, I worked on other aspects of my build. First up was the completion of the stepped planking at the aft of the ship and the frightening experience of applying color to my model. Here is my work product:

Like everything else I try to do this seemingly simple task was harder and took far longer than anticipated.

I will need to extend the painted portion onto the hull a bit (and paint a raised sidewall to the fore of the ship) but I want to wait until I see where some trim pieces land as well as the galleries. Color can't come off - it can only go on...

By the way, in other Vasa models this red portion was often done in blue. That was the thinking at the time those models were built (or the personal preference of the builder) - but there is now evidence that red was the color used.

I also began the process of detailing the hull. First, I added some simulated nails around the gun ports:

For the record, I am not bad at keeping things in a straight line (I'm an orthodontist after all) - the unruliness was intentional if not a bit overdone.

To get a sense of what I was shooting for - here is a gun port on the real thing...

My plans for detailing the hull remain unclear in my mind. I'm going to add nails in stages until I think I have captured the right look - or at least my version of the right look.

Thanks for stopping by - your comments and suggestions are more than welcome!
May I ask what you used to simulate nails? Several years ago, when I was trying to "super-detail an HO scale railroad car, I found a company that makes various types of nuts and bolts, round, square, hex, many with simulated washers in N< HOm O and G scale

Very hard to tell from this photo. I did get some previously and they were very good quality, if I remember correctly. It would appear that it is still in business: https://www.tichytraingroup.com. I have reached out via email to verify this. If it is, I will post a follow-up to that effect.

Friends,

Here are some photos of my completed Vasa. I hope you enjoy revisiting this model. I have such wonderful memories of the ways you helped make this build a success. My thanks and appreciation.

Beautiful ship, excellent detail! Magic Mike

Beautiful work by the original poster. I am speechless.

It’s just too bad, that it’s pretty much impossible to buy the same kit as a full kit. I can see some countries offering it, but only as a per month subscription.
There are companies that offer this as a full kit, Corel being one and its not subscription (Model Expo). You might also check Cornwall Models.

Corel, stay away from that one, not correct.
Billing boats kit is better but not at all as good as Artesania Latina.
I agree. After working on Corel's so-advertised HMS VICTORY, cross section, I have learned a lot about scratch-building, reference-seeking, error correction, build log-reviewing, and how Corel could have made a much more accurate model. Building this version will be a fun challenge.

I started building Corel's Victory kit, got as far as the gun ports, realized what a poor kit it was, abandoned it, & eventually sold it for something like £50. Billings' is also a poor kit - NO WALES!

Congratulations with this milestone, Paul:

Last night (Dutch time): More then half a million views! OkayExplosion
I know, there are ‘bots / lurkers / etc’ but they all came at one of the posts in your log.

PS at 10:50 Dt: And 100+ in 2 hours …..:) Perhaps is that ‘manipulation’?

Pretty cool, Peter! Thanks for sharing this discovery. I haven't visited this thread in a while, so it is good to see it is still of interest to our colleagues. I had a fun time on this model - though if I were to do it all over (I wouldn't!) I sure would make a lot of changes.

I was looking for a specific build-log and scrolling through the pages. And saw the views far in the 499K. Then it was in my mind to have a look some other days.
That is my quirk when it comes to 'numbers'. Previously posted by me ......

@dockattner This is an incredible achievement my dear friend and it could not have been more deserving for what is one of the best builds that this forum has ever seen. She will always remain my favorite of your builds !

@Peter Voogt Thank you so much for alerting us to this milestone, Peter!
Thanks very much, Heinrich. I admit I'm not quite sure why this model has struck a chord with the members and visitors.
