1/30 HMS Royal Caroline Build

WIP---
Hello Everyone Everywhere. Just a quick update or a Status report--

All 8 Cannons are completed (will Dull out all the Bolts, Chains Later).
All of the Bulwarks Holes made for the Cannons needed 5 Eyelets per Cannon.
The Top Eyelet with the Ring above the Cannon's Bulwark Square Opening & the Two Smaller Eyelets (Cannon Block & Tackle) have been permanently Installed.
The Lower Large Eyelets for the Cannons Breeching Line ARE NOT glued in permanently at this time. Much easier to attach the Breeching Line to the Cannons & then insert the Large Eyelets to the Bulwarks when that time comes. The Lower Left Breeching Eyelet doesn't have it's washer yet & only temporarily installed.

A Sneak Peak at the Stern---
Based on research and what little information that is available, the RC Stern Carvings were omitted & instead painted in order to cut down cost------
I am going to attempt to Paint the Stern because most likely the RC Stern did not have Carvings and was painted. Also, the Kits carvings for the Stern are not very good and super thick and not defined very well. I am no expert when it comes to painting, so hold down the laughing-(hehehehehehehehehee) on my process and steps. I copied the plans print to the correct size and cut out. I then put white tracing paper behind the prints & traced.
Next, I will be using a Super Ultra Fine #2 Pencil & drawing in all the characters, animals, etc.. & then I will commence with painting.
I attached a picture of the Dockyard model of the Bellona to give some type of reference only.
To be continued -------------

Interesting to see Rick. I tried to make decalls for this and tested them but these were to thin to give the correct look. Therefore I finally decided to use the carvings and sand them as thin as possible. I have now found a different technique I will test on my Alert to do this.

Looking forward to your painting.

I have so much respect for folks who can paint!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure how much further I am going to go with any more painting because once the Rudder is on and the Stern Carvings and all the Wood frames are attached & the Stern Lids/Hinge get put on, the eyes tend not to stare as much at the painting??????
Please feel free critiquing--good or bad!!!!!!!!!!!

The black color around the cannon trucks represent iron around them ?

They look fantastic. I saved a screenshot for my future builts.

Thanks !!

Hi Rick,

You said you wanted some critics, and being Dutch I will give you some :-).
Are you using oil paints to do this? This as with oil paints you can work in layers and create some additional contrast and shading.
I am certainly not a painter but I would try to get some additional shading in the tails of the sea creatures.

These are curled tails and you need to add some additional paint layers to bring some depht and shading. This will bring your paint work to life.

See below this type of painting on the navy board models.

This result you should receive by creating a light flesh colour base and a secondly a dark brown semi transparent layer for the shading and edges.
Hope it helps.

Rick, you know I'm a fan, but here I concur 100%. with Maarten. I was going to say it looked "flat", but Maarten hit the nail on the head. I still take my hat off to you for painting these decorations - I would never have attempted that.

Hello Maarten,
I appreciate the input & Don't worry about any criticism because that's how I improve & I don't take it negatively!!!!
I did not use oils, I used Acrylic Paints. The Tails are a Antique Gold color and I did lightly mark the scales out that are on the inside of the tails that the pictures don't really show. I think I will try to darken the Scales and do a little shading inside the Tails and see how it comes out?????
I also really struggled with the Lions Face too. A Painter I am not, LOL

WIP--
This is the FINAL FINISHED Stern Painting. I Highlighted the Scales in the Tails to show them better and did a little more Shading & Highlight Effects to calm down the Antique Gold Color Tails. Once I Clear Coat a Clear Finish over the painting, it should even out any Glare/Bright Points and give it a more even appearance I am trying to get. For me, other than I am definitely no painter who could match the professional painters that were used for the Admiralty/Dockyard Models, I was using multiple NON-OIL colors on a Black Background which in turn made things difficult for me & my paint experience level as well. Like I stated before, once all the Sterns Carvings are in place along with all the other missing Stern details, the Painting will not be a huge eye catching vocal point only like it is right now.
I also attached some photos for references. The Print picture is from my Book The Royal Yacht Caroline that I colored in a long time ago. The other picture is from a Beautiful 1/24 scale RC. I do not know what process the builder used for his stern painting but almost looks like a thicker card print out that was glued in place?????
