American Scout C-2 Cargo Ship by Sterling Models

My father sailed C-2 cargo ships. I sailed a C-5. Very interested in seeing your C-2 model.
This is exactly my point, Kurt! I’m so amazed at how many people relate to this build. I have always been drawn to the war ships like frigates, galleons, and battleships. But the mundane cargo ship is getting more attention. I don’t know if it’s because of personal connections or because it’s something different. I’m starting to get into it myself. Keep watching. I may need some help on the superstructure. None of the parts are marked. The old plans in the url posted by Davidp above are difficult to read. Good to have you visit.

I have the general arrangement blueprints from the SS. President Cleveland, a C5-s-75a. Perhaps someday I will gather all the photos I made of that vessel while living aboard her and make a model. However, my first love in models will always be the 17th century great ship.

BALSA? Garbage wood. Way too brittle. Only good for filler. And unless you are planning to fill the model with helium and send it sailing into the sky, USE BASSWOOD for structural framing. It's CHEAP. It's STRONG. It's AVAILABLE... and it WORKS. Save the balsa for the Guillow's model airplane kits. Buy as much as you want at Menards in the craft wood section and build a FLEET of ships for pennies.

If anyone wants them, I have blueprints of my old ship, the S.S. American Mail (S.S President Cleveland).

My father sailed the C-2 S.S. Gulf Merchant. He says he will provide some pictures of that ship for this forum later. He sailed it from the US to Chile. It was an "east coast" C-2, which had a different bow profile than the west coast C-2's made in California.

I thought about coating it with runny superglue.
You could also use PVA glue and gauze bandage roll to reinforce the hull. The bandage is soaked in glue then applied to the inner surfaces of the hull. You run the risk of damaging your model if it’s not strengthened.

Consider craft plywood available at stores like Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. Lowe’s or Home Depot might have it. Comes in fractional thicknesses 1/32” to 1/16”. That balsa will continue to fight you. Trying to glass it, you will wind up with a mess.

It doesn’t have to be the same thickness.
As long as it’s sort of close you’ll be fine.

On the American Scout I built, after the hull was planked over I mixed up some west systems epoxy and poured it into the hull then rolled the hull every which way in order to coat the inside of the hull with epoxy.
This was done in numerous applications because the hull is so big.
You could also thin out PVA glue, like Elmers white glue or Titebond wood glue and do the same coating inside the hull.
This will add some rigidity and strength to the planking.

Look like you have numerous Lowe’s home improvement centers around where you are.
They sell small stock wood products.

A man approached me after seeing one of my models. He has a Sterling Models American Scout cargo ship and wants me to build it for him. It’s a radio controlled ship from the 60s, and he wants it to be a waterline model for an HO scene set in the Pacific Northwest. I don’t think I can make a waterline model from it because I would have to saw through a lot of bulkheads. I suggested he cut a hole for it to fit in, putty around the hull, and pour in the resin.

Isn't this kit way too big for HO scale?
