Blandford 1/48 by Modelship Dockyard

I might "cheat" and glue the beams to the underside of the deck and fit it as a 1 piece
Some folks seem to do well with this kind of assembly so why not give it a try. I have never been able to get it work, but that's just me. For 17th century ships the deck planking would go in first then the spirketting then the waterways so a pre-assembled deck could work and for 18th century ships the waterway and the deck planks go in, followed by the spirketting so the preassembled deck with the waterway could work as well. The below is from The Construction and Fitting of the English Man of War by Goodwin, page 44.

Thanks Allan I am coming to the same conclusion... I might "cheat" and glue the beams to the underside of the deck and fit it as a 1 piece .. nothing can be seen when the bulkhead is fitted
Andy

With the bulwarks sloping inwards is likely to work? Even assuming you can make the deck planks and beams into a perfect sub-assembly off the ship, surely that’s going to be tricky.

Looking at Alan’s diagram, if you use the ‘beam support to align the beams, as the diagram in your instructions indicates, the upper, straight edge becomes the spirketting. It IS a part of the real ship.

Hi Smithy
Thanks for the compliment but they are Peter Goodwin's drawings :). I wish I was that talented and knowledgeable. Regardless, the spacer plank would create a different order of assembly but I doubt most people would notice when it is all assembled. The below is my attempt at a sketch showing the spacer plank above the beams. The dimensions shown are from the 1719 Establishment list of scantlings for a 20 gun ship.

Thanks for all your help Allan and Smithy
The beams are all fitted it's not "righthand Allan's drawings but it looks not too bad
As I have said I am not after building a perfect model of a particular time but something that looks reasonable and keeps me out of mischief!!

Good evening Andy. Way to go. Your Blanford is certainly turning into a way more than “reasonable “ POF admiralty model. As for keeping out of mischief……;). Cheers Grant

Hi all
I have started on the guns
I built the carriages earlier so now I have blackened the the brass guns and fitted the trunnion which wasn't supplied with the kit neither were any blocks or rigging for the guns.I am very surprised they were not supplied on a kit of this price.
There is supplied photo etch cap squares and pins but I am afraid my shakes mean this is a step too far so the caps were made from black cartridge paper
I am still not sure how to finish the guns
Just another 21 to go !

Hi everyone I thought that I would start my Blandford kit
It will not be a blow by blow log ... there are several excellent builds here and I don't think that I can add much
The kit arrived in good time and as a bonus I didn't have to pay any extra for customs etc
As has been said before the box isn't very interesting Victor has obviously put his effort into the content and what content it is !!! Sheet after sheet of perfect timber ready to be assembled
I started building the frame or stand which went together very easily
Next was the keel once again all parts fitted well with the usual removal of the char

Happy birthday! Birthday-Cake
Thanks Jimsky

I may be interested in this kit. Your project is looking very fine. You log will help a lot.
The quality of the wood and the laser cutting is brilliant better than most kits
The instructions however are virtually non existent use mine and Kens build as your instructions and try to keep thinking 2 steps ahead
Good luck
Andy

Hi all I hope those who celebrated Xmas had a good time and a happy new year
I am going to class Blandford as completed as far as this build log goes. I have ordered ropes and pulleys to rig the guns ..I am surprised that they were not included with the kit considering that the guns are so well detailed otherwise
I know it is far from perfect but on the whole I am quite pleased with the finished model
A few final photos of Blandford and the rest of my fleet
If anyone wants a copy of A.O.S Blandford let me know (preferably in the UK)
Onwards to the next one .. not sure what yet
