Blandford 1/48 by Modelship Dockyard

Hi all
Well rather than putting the Blandford on hold I have decided to push on and see what happens
I have built up the stern which went reasonably well
I have also started sorting out the planking for the internal and external parts of the hull
I didn't realise that there was so much deck planking in the ship so a lot of my bad workmanship is covered.... what a waste of all that worrying about it ! Only me and the members of SOS will ever know lol

Good morning Andy. Good call to push on. The decking looks brilliant. Cheers Grant

Just found this build while getting to know the forum. I fear I may never live long enough to develop the skills needed to attempt anything like this. I used to live in Maltby until 2001 when I moved south to Peterborough.

Well they say the best road in Maltby is the one that goes out lol
You are never too old to learn new skills
Most of this build is new to me

lol, the best road in Maltby is the one down to Roach Abbey, loved walking the dogs down there. Only just started building my first wooden kit and I have to say I am really enjoying it. Space and budget restraints will mean having to stick with the smaller kits for a while and I don’t think that will be a bad thing. Cannot run until I have learned to walk.

Yes it is a lovely walk down there I take my Sisters dog a couple of days a week

Hi all who are following this disaster of a build !
I have planked the deck and the inner hull I SHOULD have done it the other way round. I thought that the inner planking would cover any gaps between the deck and the bulwark instead it made the bulwark planking too tall .. rather than leaving a thin piece at the top I cut a thin piece half way down after it is painted red I don't think it will be noticeable
My next problem is that none of the bow fittings are the right shape
More head scratching...not sure how to cure this problem
The deck planking at least covers my bad joints but all that work gone to waste

Hi Andy. I agree your deck planking looks great and those beams and joints you worried about are not noticeable. If you didn’t point out the thinner bulwark plank I would not have seen it. The upper deck fitting could be shaped to fit. Your symmetry is good so a plan will be made for sure. Will turn out a good looking model no doubt. Cheers Grant

I myself do not believe any good work would go to waste just because it wont be seen. I think the unseen has to be good or else the finish wont be.

Disaster of a Build?

This has been quite an epic read. It's reminding me of the Odyssey, one of those stories where the hero, that's you Maltbyguy, keeps on battling despite all of the obstacles that fate places in his way. Remember that Osysseus did get home in the end, a bit battered and a whole lot wiser. I've learned a lot from reading about your mistakes, about your learning. You're brave to be so open about it all. I'd like to see you finish it but don't do it for me. It's your kit, your decision. I'll tell you what's in my mind at this point in the log though, just in case it's useful.

I can't deny that some parts of your model are a bit wobbly if compared with some of those built by folks who are on their fifth? tenth? PoF model. You can't deny that if you compare your build with the nine out of ten models like this that never get started, or are abandoned, you are doing very well indeed. Perhaps you bit off more than you could comfortably chew with this very complex kit, but you are choking it down bite by bite. It won't be museum standard, yet perhaps the next one will.

If you carry on, you'll end up with a model ship which will impress everyone, except yourself. When you build another one, you'll be travelling a similar road and you'll know the way right to the end. It will be brilliant.

If you stop now you will either give up the hobby entirely, which would be a real waste, or you'll build that second big PoF brilliantly ... up to about this point, and then you'll be a novice again for the rigging and deck furnishings and everything that you haven't yet tackled on Blandford. Half the build will be the second one and half will be a first attempt. You'll be disappointed again.

On the subject of building, how are your skills now compared to back in February? I bet you've built up your skills and knowledge no end. You could start looking at Blandford as your apprenticeship, build it just for the learning and when you're done, build your masterpiece. That way of thinking takes away all the pressure to be perfect, that's pressure that you are applying so only you can relax it.

And February 12th? That's only 236 days ago! You've done so much in a very short time. Is a fundamental problem that you need to slow down and spend more time thinking and planning the next move. I'd expect to take well over a year to get to where you are now with a first PoF of this size.

Oh I got a bit bossy there, I think. Sorry. I do want you to finish Blandford though - I want to read to the end of the epic.

thanks for everyone's kind words of encouragement especially Smithy
yes my next build will be better all my previous plank on bulkhead models have gradually got better so the same should happen with my next POF model... still not sure what that will be
what I do know is that without the encouragement of the members of this forum I would have given up on Blandford a long time ago
It will never be a museum piece BUT that is not what I am after it is a "FUN" project and I will never be a rivet counter or spend hours of research getting every detail right of a specific time in history
Once again thanks for the likes and encouragement
Andy

Hi all
A quick update on Blandford
I have done most of the outside planking and for me it doesn't look too bad.. I am sure that there will be plenty that could have done a better job
The lighter planks will be covered with another plank painted black to simulate the whale
I am now trying to get my head around the stern.. I have temporarily fitted the sports for the beams but when I fit the last beam the support needs to come in bt about 5mm per side
I have deconstructed the stern and hope that I can rebuild it and pull the sides in a bit
Any suggestions ??

Are you sure the beams are too short or are the bulwarks too far apart? The below is the plan of Biddeford, 1727 a twenty gun also built to the 1719 Establishment as was Blandford 1720. I scaled it up to full size and added a few dimensions for reference that might be of some help.
