Blandford 1/48 by Modelship Dockyard

Hi Andy,

This looks better than the lower deck for sure. While I can't see everything it appears that if you shifted a few beams the carlings would line up rather nicely... For example, beams 4 and 7 could shift to the port - maybe 5 could move a millimeter to the starboard???

Looking very good though - I wouldn't worry about it too much! It may be too late to be moving beams around with the knees in place...

Hi thanks for the reply
I did try to move a few of the worst ones .. but as usual when you WANT a glue joint to break it will not. I am just starting to cut out some knees that I broke ! Its a good job that there are some excess on the timber that I managed to save

Well all the Carlings are now fitted and don't look too bad
I thought that I would have a break from the deck and start to make the fittings ladders gratings and guns
Ladders or are they steps I am never sure when one becomes the other ? Have always been my nemesis and so I have bought a 0.5mm saw blade for my Proxxon FET. I can get the angle of the treads using the angle guide but I am struggling as to how to keep the treads evenly spaced any suggestions would be welcome. I think I might be better using a sled rather than the angle guide I haven't used it in anger yet but it doesn't look too secure to me once again I am open to suggestions and comments
Thanks for all the likes so far it is much appreciated
Andy

Hi all
I have started on the guns .. as usual there is a lot of char to remove and the axles have to be carved to size
A bit like most of the build it's a case of getting in the groove put on some music and chill
Still a long way to go ... what would modeling be without takaway containers lol

Thanks for all the likes .. it does keep me going

Ccannon production continues
I am not sure of the finish ... I have seen cannon painted red ? Leave them natural ? Any other suggestions welcome

Hallo Andy,
I am not aware, that there was a requirement by the navy board to paint the carriages red - also there is a discussion if the inner bulkheads and other parts were painted red -> and as I know also different reasons, why the have painted (if) in red - blood?
In my opinion it is a pure question of taste how you would like to present your POF model

Take a look at Ricks alias @modelshipbuilder65 amazing model with painted gun carriages

Hi Andy
Lovely work! How did you round the ends of the axles for the carriages?
Allan
Very carefully with a sharp knife
I kept trying a wheel on... but beware if it is too tight the axles will break.. ask me how I know HaHa
It seemed to take ages but like a lot of ship building it's a case of music on and get into the zone

Yes I have been looking at Rick's build his gun carriages are wonderful
I have finished the wood work just waiting for some brass black for the accessories

I used to do that as well but was not very good at it, You may find the following interesting. I wound up making cutters that made perfectly round axle ends. First drill the hole to the diameter you want for the axles then with a hack saw cut a few slots to act as cutting blades. Chuck the cutter in a hand drill or drill press and cut the axle. The shoulder acts as a stop. Clean up any wood tags and ready to go. I eventually made several for various sizes/scales.

I posted these pics a while back in someone else's build log, don't remember whose though. Wish you had seen it, but there is always a next time Anchor
Hopefully others following your log will see it and be able to use it as well.

Hi all I had totally lost interest in the Blandford and closed the workshop door on it
I have however recently made the push to get the gun deck finished.. unfortunately it now shows up all my bad joints and un square joinery I can't do anymore sanding some of the pieces are getting a bit thin.It might be worth getting some more timber and completely covering the lot up.
As usual comments and criticism will be welcomed
Andy

I know such a situation, when the feeling is growing, that you miss fun in working on a model
Keep this as part of the never ending learning curve - it was a big step from the POB HMS Pickle to this POF model
And you did a good job on your first POF model - the next one will be even better - with better angles, joinery atc.
Put this on side and start a new project and maybe in some time you want to work also on the Blandford

We are often our own worst enemies. A perfect model is a lofty goal that most of us will never reach but your work is well on the way. Nothing wrong with stepping aside for an hour, a day, a week or even months or a year or more. I would bet the majority of us have done it and find a substitute for the interim, be it research instead of making sawdust or even a different endeavor altogether.

Good afternoon Andy. IMHO - there is so much good with your Blandford. IF it where me, I would take those sections I don’t like and make a plan for partial decking, maybe up to cannon line , PS and SB and also use a staggered decking effect at the foredeck ……and then just go for it… cut away some of the other upper deck beams etc (those you don’t like) to make a look through at midships and build some the interior details. Create a look - in effect. I’m not sure if this kit has a ships boat but that too would “hide” some parts you don’t like. It Must be fun for you tho Andy and would create a unique Blandford. Uwek (@Uwek ) advice is so true …..for each of us. Sometimes it’s best to open that single Malt (no pun intended ;) ) and take time out - maybe a new ship to enjoy. The Blandford can wait in the Drydock Thumbsup until her sirens start to sing. Grant

Thanks for the suggestions Grant..there is no ships boat with the kit but I do have a 1/48 cutter that would cover a multitude of sins
A single malt will ALWAYS make things better
