Blandford 1/48 by Modelship Dockyard

A quick update on Blandford
I wasn't happy with the stern and the way things went together. So I disassembled the whole thing including the planking internal and external
I then temporarily fitted the uprights to the stern window piece this made sure that the uprights matched the window frames.I then fitted this assembly to the stern of the ship and used spare timber to re plank the internal and external
Overall I am a lot happier with the outcome
I have still got the problem of the beams so that will be the next thing to sort out
Andy

Thanks for sharing your travails as well as your build with us Andy. I am in agreement with Smithy, that was a plucky thing to do, congrats for not settling for something with which you were unhappy. The framing of the five lights between the stern timbers are nicely done. They look very neatly made and I was curious if these were laser cut or if you assembled them yourself.

The stern timbers and the frames for the lights are all laser cut. There is also a carved boxwood piece to go over the windows and the top of the stern
The quality of the wood and parts in this kit is great it certainly puts to shame the European manufacturers....give it some Caldercraft type instructions and it would be world beating

Good morning Andy. Wow, big decision and kudos for doing it. Redo looking good . Cheers Grant

How are you getting on with the beams, @maltbyguy? I'm not rushing you, just curious.
Thanks for the nudge Smithy
I have been meaning to post for a while but not got around to it
When I am at the bench I tend to get involved with the build and not think about taking photos
The beams are coming along nicely thanks I will take some photos today and post an update
Andy

As promised a quick update on Blandford
After I had re built the stern area the beams all fitted with very little alteration YEA!
But as usual it is a case of one step forward and two steps back
Although the beams fitted on the beam support they were too high and so the deck was a good 10mm away from the cross bulkhead ... so beam supports have been removed.I am waiting for a reply from Wuxiaomeng as to where the support is supposed to go 20241101_110021.jpgin the meantime I have sanded and painted the inner bulwarks and fitted the last two planks on the outside these are thicker than the rest and are painted black

so beam supports have been removed
I am sure it is a terminology issue, but what is a beam support? Are you speaking about the deck clamps or pillars? If the clamps, the drawing below may be a little help. Blandford was built to the 1719 Establishment and the dimensions on the drawing are from the Establishment for a 20 gun ship. I included a jpg and pdf, the latter probably being more clear.

Cor! That’s gorgeous.

Good save on the stern, mate.

Thanks Allan yes terminology I think
It was never fitted to Blandford but in the kit is a beam support but the instructions are not clear as to where it goes

Now that's something I hadn't thought about I just thought that they would sit on
Before taking anything apart I will wait fou Wuxiaomeng to reply
There's plenty of other things to do

I was looking at another thread of Le Requin earlier today and there was an identical set up on the poop deck of that ship. The beam support is really a beam spacer on that model.

It looks that way on your diagram too.

Is it really needed? If was not needed on the ship is it really needed on the model? I thought the following from the contract for a 20 gun might be interesting to you.

Thanks Allan I am coming to the same conclusion... I might "cheat" and glue the beams to the underside of the deck and fit it as a 1 piece .. nothing can be seen when the bulkhead is fitted
