CalderCraft HM Granado

On the quarterdeck i placed on both sides 2 small cleats after i painted them black.
IMG_20230922_123301.jpg
And i make the kevels (1 on each side) and start to paint them red before i place them.
IMG_20230922_123535.jpg
Because the small cleats are the same material as the gallery flue i painted them the same time. Now that one is also dry and i placed the gallery flue on the place in the coaming on the forecastle.

Next i painted the brass sweep ports hangings.
I didn't see the port holes when i made the gunports in the description or i forgot it. But it's now almost impossible to make the sweep port holes true the side in the model without damaging.
So i will place them not standing open but closed.
On both sides there will be 9 sweep ports.
Shamefully the hanging for them are not perfect anymore. The brass etched sheet didn't stay perfect in the box.
I tried to give them again their original shape before i painted them.

As you will see it's amazing little and fragile.
I will try to use them and hope i can keep them a little bit in their original shape.

I have been working on the sweep ports. And it is so small it's almost impossible to make them for me.
I'm even happy i didn't make the holes true the sides of the model and place the sweep ports open.

I need to mention that open sweep ports would be probably a lot nicer to see.

Well i first painted the sweep ports hanging matt black and let them all together.
I didn't remove them from the brass etched sheet.
You can see a photo of that in my previous post.
Next i took the lightest walnut strip of 0.5x3mm i could find otherwise they get to dark on the sides of the model and i don't want that.
Still it's a lot darker than i wanted but there isn't a lighter one and i don't have some other old strip laying around here with the right thickness.

First i make a few strips with a length of 35mm and glue careful the hangings on to it.
IMG_20230926_132049.jpg
Next i cut the strips with the hanging on a size of 3.75mm long
IMG_20230927_100710.jpg
While i was cutting them i found out the brass hangings didn't stick very good to the strip.
And i had to glue some again on to the small walnut strip parts.

Then i made from a old strip a easy mall.
Now it's easier to place the sweep ports on the right place and hight.

When you are gonna place the sweep ports there are a few things you need to pay attention to.
1. The ports go open to the front of the ship so the "legs" of the hanging point to the front.
2. The legs have a little bit a S-turn. That turn need to go under.

I saw point 2 to late myself and have some sweep ports on my model now wrong.
I won't change it because taking them of now will make it not better but probably some unnecessary damage.
As long you don't tell anyone, no one will notice it. The are to small for it.

When i start on the cannon doors i needed the dark walnut wood.
It doesn't match the hull planking in my opinion so i made new ones out of some old wood i had left from another model.
It's a bit lighter and match the color a lot better

I only made the front doors till now, first i sand them and dry fit them so they fit inside the gunport.
Then i painted the inside of the doors red, and the hangings black.
The hangings i bend about 90 degrees and glue them on the doors about 0.9mm from the side before i glued the doors into their place.

The original wood was really not very good for these lids - good decision to change them

It's been a while since I've been able to do any model building due to various circumstances, but luckily things are going well enough now to slowly pick it up again. This week I've been working on the catheads and the lower and upper cheeks. After sanding, sizing, and fitting them, I immediately installed the hawse-hole bolsters and drilled the holes. I also sanded and fitted the headrails and head timbers. After I was satisfied, I lightly sanded them again and installed the brass hair brackets, after which I painted them French blue.

14 mm from the 5th gun port i placed on both sides the side steps and made 2 entry ladders for the inside.
Also i placed 2 entry port stanchions at each ladder. Actually i needed to drill a 0.5mm hole on the brass stanchions to put the hand rope through it but my drill bits won't get trough. So i knot it around the ball on top of them afrer i painted the black.

Next step is the channels and chainplates.
First i took out all the channels of hhe 2mm walnut sheet.
Then i took a spaycan matt black for metal but it didn't stay good on the messing chainplates. So i will paint them again after i put the deadeyes in them and place the chainplates in the channels.
I need 3 different chainplates and 2 different sizes deadeyes.
Some deadeyes need 0.25mm black robe below them.
When i have all the deadeyes in the chainplates i place them in the channels using a toothpick with a tiny drip superglue.
So they stay better on their place.
Next i paint with a brush the chainplates matt black again and make already the peaces for the outboard channel "locking" so the chainplates are locked in their channel slots. I make this of a 1.5x1.5mm walnut.
When the paint is dry i place te walnut strips on it and sand carefully the edges so its in line with the rest.
When im happy i place everything on the sides of the model.
Now i need to wait till it's totally dry before i can pinn the lower ends of the chainplates to the model with some dome headed pins who will also be painted matt black.
